Hi,

Does anyone know if you are considered self-employed for US tax purposes if you earn compensation (NEC or nonemployee compensation) in the US from a US employer while living in Argentina? I lived in Argentina for all of 2021 and also received compensation in Argentina from an Argentine employer. Any feedback is much appreciated!

the US taxes its citizens whereever you are in the world

It is earned in the country you are physically present in when earned. So it is taxable as worldwide income but could be excluded from income tax due to being foreign earned. For self-employment taxes it is only excludable if you participate in the country you live in social security system and they have a social security treaty. Argentina and the USA don't have one of those agreements.

If you are getting. 1099 NEC presumably you are a contractor and it is considered self-employment regardless of your geographic location.
