Interesting today. I have a flight on hold for the US with American. Cost is 1315 USD. I just tried to pay for it with an Argentine credit card. The system then came back and told me that if I used an Argentine CC, the flight price would be $1470.

I'll probably go in to a ticket office today and see what they say if I pay in effectivo. If they tell me that it's 1315 * 4.7 pesos, great. It would wind up being a great deal for me since I would convert dollars at the blue rate so net, it would be around $1000 for the ticket. But if they revise it to 1470 * 4.7, it would cost me around 1100 when converting to pesos at the blue rate. At that point, it doesn't make any sense to pay in pesos here (esp since I get benefits on my US card).

When I went Cuba, the Travel Agency gave me a price in U$ and I paid in Pesos at the "Offical" rate in Efectivo. Saved quite a bit

which travel agency you used?

If you do it online you will be charged in USD. If you do it in person they charge 25 USD fee but I believe you will be charged in pesos ( this way you avoid the 15% surcharge ) I know they will take cash in pesos ( saw several people paying with huge stacks of cash some 10 days ago when I was booking )

I don't think they can charge your Arg CC in USD correct? Or they can but it's automatically converted into pesos at the official rate.

Anyway, I'm curious to see what they say the fare is when I go in. Like I said, it was more the issue that as soon as I put in an Arg CC, the fare price jumped 170 USD.

Timely thread, was just about to ask a related question.

Question is, which is the cheapest way to purchase ticket from American to US (Miami/ Orlando or San Diego) for a trip end Dec early Jan.

  1. Buy online from American US website, ask a friend in US to buy
  2. Buy online from American website from here
  3. Or do through a travel agent here
I should be paying with US (USD) credit card in all three cases.

Also, for the period of end Dec early Jan, where are the cheapest popular US destinations.... sorry I am being lazy.

Thanks.

Yes , you are lazy. Cheapest way is to buy through travel agent here , change your dollars at the blue rate , then pay in pesos. Instant 30 % discount on airfares.

but the 15% surcharge is added to your monthly bill by your Credit Card issuer on foriegn proccesed transactions, not the merchant, not sure whether AA procceses AA.com.ar transactions locally or in the US, you might try Despegar or the like and see how it prices out.
