An argentinian with a few questions

The people are all secretly racist? I spent a year working in Australia and half the people in our company were from various asian countries, it seemed quite multicultural to me. I never found anything like the racisim you get in Argentina against people from Peru/Bolivia.

In one expensive apartment building I was living in, I brought a girl from Peru home at about 2am - this is a friend of mine, studies at university, works, nice family - but clearly from Peru with dark skin.

By 1pm the next afternoon I had the manager of the building telling me he had recieved several complaints about the 'type of people' I was letting into the building, and I should watch my back because word had got around and my dear neighbours were extremely pissed off at me.

Does this make Argentinians 'hideously backwards' ??? So why are you here?

Let me tell you one thing: Racism that you get in countries like Germany or Holland is to your face, they won't pretend that they like you- generally speaking, you will know when they don't. Australians are extremely friendly, loud and obnoxious at the same time, they hate Poms (English), they hate Yanks (Americans), they obviously don't like Muslims, hate the Asians... yet they still pretend that everything is fine, they are your best mates. Then you try and look for work : Do you have any Aussie work experience? 10 years international whatever experience means nothing there, did you go to school in Australia? They won't tell you but do you speak English with an Aussie accent?- which is, by the way, the most irritating accent ever. Do you have a Western name? Your CV will go straight into the bin if you are a Wing Shong Liu. Or you will be lucky to get a job cleaning toilets or waiting tables with your several masters degrees. You will never know about racism if you come from a Western background, because you won't be discriminated.

Just google it, you will find hundreds of posts on racism there, from people that had enough! I lived in many different countries all my life, never seen anything like in Australia, ever! And I had a good life and a job, was only observing what was going on. I have 3 years of London experience, in the worst economic climate migrants get 10 times better opportunities in London than they ever do in Australia.

I know Australia inside out, it makes me wanna puke when people come out and say it is so wonderful, it makes me even more sick they have such a good reputation abroad. Look at what they do to refugees or Aboriginals, when they are in whatever countries helping whoever to bomb the cr*ap out of whoever.

As for Argentina, there is a lot of ignorance so I have no doubt there is plenty of racism, I am not dealing with people at a deep level nor looking for a job. Not going to defend Portenos now, there is good and bad everywhere. All I can see here is they are so proud of their Italian heritage for who knows why? Chinese-Korean-Japanese = all Chinese; Arab, Armenian, Turkish = all Turco. Some sort of identity crisis.

I don't know what your point is really.

But, I'm guessing from your post you are not a Spanish speaker from say Mexico or Bolivia or Chile or Peru trying to get a professional job here, right? Do you want to have a chat with a couple of friends of mine and they can tell you their experience?

Going on & on about your bad experience in Europe/US/Oz doesn't erase the problems here. Are we pretending every thing is perfect here? So, again, I don't get your point.

Hi,

I was referring to only a single comment made about Australia/ Australians. I have Aussie friends, good and bad in every culture, but just making the point that racism is universal and a lot more in some cultures, in a hidden sneaky kind of way. And I have never had any bad professional experiences in Europe or US. London work mentality is: can you do the job? It is yours, it does not matter so much where you come from, or what your accent is, or if you have some kind of previous UK work experience.

I can imagine how hard it must be for people with different skin color here. Ignorance is the cause of all evil!

Mature countries confront racism, bring it out into the open. It's an ugly, painful, difficult process. Often lots of people get killed along the way. But it's necessary.

Every country in the world has some work to do, but some are much further along than others. I'm sure there is loads of racism in Australia (they did have "white Australia" immigration policies until 1970, no?), but there are many Australians who are obviously making an effort to improve the situation. Recently the Australian government apologized to aborigines for stealing their children a few decades ago. An government apology certainly doesn't fix much, but it's a start.

On the other hand, I don't see any evidence of Argentina confronting it's ridiculous racism. White Argentines could go on all day about how "European" they are. There's a reason why so many Nazis escaping Germany after WW2 headed straight for Argentina; they knew they'd find some like-minded folks there.

I've heard the most stupidly racist crap come out of people's mouths in Buenos Aires and it's clear that there are no repercussions for saying stupid racist things and that people don't tend to think very much before they speak. It's like what I imagine living in the south in the US was like before our civil rights movement. No need to censor one's self or worry about who might hear you or be "politically correct" in any way; you can just say whatever racist damn thing pops into your mind.

Australia may have a long way to go, but Argentina isn't even trying. It's an obscenely racist place. All of those kids with dark-ish skin growing up in villas don't have much of a shot at any kind of upward social mobility. They're lucky if they'll even get enough education to be fully literate. And the "Europeans" living in their faux-Parisian buildings couldn't care less.

I'm not even talking about skin color. The people I'm talking about look just as Argentine as any other Argentine. It's solely a question of nationalism.

Racism, provincialism, sexism, agism, religionism*, protectionism*, geekism*, clothism*, weightism*, wealthism*, etc exists everywhere. Some people are better at hiding it than others.

I moved here for love (yes, I married him) and more sunshine (and yes, I still enjoy it). Living (and not merely traveling) outside one's home culture has been shown to increase creativity and flexibility, and I'd add spiritual depth to that. Having enough money for a roof and food matters, after that you get to choose how to invest your time, love, and energy to create a life that has meaning for you. And common wisdom, religions, and positive psychology research agree that after those basic needs are met, it is all about connecting with others. Best wishes wherever you may go/stay.

Rubbish, as most things you write here.

Racism is about everywhere, the only difference being that in most developed countries you might be fined or prosecuted. And this is not exactly what I understand under fighting racism!
Your comments sound racist to me. Not because you come from the USA are any better than the Argentines. But you seem to believe so...this is where racism starts, when someone feels superior to other people.
