An argentinian with a few questions

they knew they'd find some like-minded folks there
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

The US american government brought this guy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wernher_von_Braun
to the US and made him a NATIONAL HERO because he served their interests. That makes the US a racist folk?

From your first link:

'Tomás Eloy Martínez, professor of Latin American studies at Rutgers University, writes that Juan Perón allowed Nazi criminals into the country in hopes of acquiring advanced German technology developed during the war. Martínez also notes that Eva Perón played no part in allowing Nazis into the country.'

Same thing the US and the USSR did. And God knows how many Nazis more were employed after the war by the US secret services. Probably we will never know.

'While Juan Perón's Argentina allowed many Nazi criminals to take refuge in Argentina, Juan Perón's Argentina also accepted more Jewish immigrants than any other country in Latin America'

'U.S. Ambassador George S. Messersmith visited Argentina in 1947 during the first term of Juan Perón. Messersmith noted, "There is not as much social discrimination against Jews here as there is right in New York or in most places at home..."

And this is all written in the English Wikipedia, which surely is not pro-Argentine in any way.

And before you post links all over the place, maybe you should read them first.

since this site censors and bans people without warning I have gone with my thoughts elsewhere

Anatolie, Digger,

If you get together for some grog, I'm buying. But not necessarily because I agree with you, in fact, the opposite :)

Having lived in Australia for an extended period of time I had the exact opposite experience than Digger.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Australia or trying to say there's no racism at all. There's something quite interesting about Australia when it comes to immigration and boat people... but for some reason it all gets put under the umbrella of racism and that's probably not quite right.

Yet, it seems to be incredibly opportunistic for politicians to take advantage of this (ie: the Tampa and now in the upcoming election [August 21] the "Send the boats back" policy).

Nevertheless, I would love to hear your stories as I'm sure they will be very interesting perspectives.

If you are interested, I have a St. Hallett Shiraz 2006 from the Barossa Valley ready to go :)

Thanks,

Random striker

Ahahaha but you are an Aussie random.striker!

Well, true... I never said that I wasn't. But I'm also Mexican, Argentinean and Italian. In addition I hold/held permanent residencies for US, India and The Netherlands.

Does this make me more or less Aussie in your books?

But more important: does that invalidates my experience/perspective, you reckon?

I don't have an Aussie CabSav though, but I offer a good Graffigna CabSav - Merlot (http://www.graffignawines.com/arg/home.html) if you fancy.

Thanks,

Random striker

PD: No, I'm not a consulate officer (had a big laugh about that) :)

I was going to have a lot of fun writing down your "exact opposite experience" , lol.

Saying things without substantiation and not coming clean about your origins does not give much credibility to your statements.

Who you are? Consulate staffer perhaps?

Hi Digger,

I am outside Buenos Aires for a while- in Salta region and couldn't reply to yr message, your pm isn't working or may be deactivated.

Thanks

Argies are racist

I haven't read this entire thread but I'd like to chime in:

Argentina, I'm convinced, is no more or less racist than about 160 other countries on our big green Earth. (This leaves about 10 that are less racist and 30 that are more).

I've been told time and again by people not from the US that the US is very racist. This wasn't my experience growing up there, but then again we were all white in my own private Wonder Bread town, Ca.

My point: racism is common all over the planet (certianly in Arg and México and Spain) and there is something to be said for the phonomenon known as political correctness. In 1977 my kindergarten teacher had me painting little pictures accompanied by the motto/mantra "black is beautiful".

Really, I just wanted to give my two cents worth so I could join the party when you all get together to booze it up.

When's the debate?

Let me tell you one thing: Racism that you get in countries like Germany or Holland is to your face, they won't pretend that they like you- generally speaking, you will know when they don't. Australians are extremely friendly, loud and obnoxious at the same time, they hate Poms (English), they hate Yanks (Americans), they obviously don't like Muslims, hate the Asians... yet they still pretend that everything is fine, they are your best mates. Then you try and look for work : Do you have any Aussie work experience? 10 years international whatever experience means nothing there, did you go to school in Australia? They won't tell you but do you speak English with an Aussie accent?- which is, by the way, the most irritating accent ever. Do you have a Western name? Your CV will go straight into the bin if you are a Wing Shong Liu. Or you will be lucky to get a job cleaning toilets or waiting tables with your several masters degrees. You will never know about racism if you come from a Western background, because you won't be discriminated.

Just google it, you will find hundreds of posts on racism there, from people that had enough! I lived in many different countries all my life, never seen anything like in Australia, ever! And I had a good life and a job, was only observing what was going on. I have 3 years of London experience, in the worst economic climate migrants get 10 times better opportunities in London than they ever do in Australia.

I know Australia inside out, it makes me wanna puke when people come out and say it is so wonderful, it makes me even more sick they have such a good reputation abroad. Look at what they do to refugees or Aboriginals, when they are in whatever countries helping whoever to bomb the cr*ap out of whoever.

As for Argentina, there is a lot of ignorance so I have no doubt there is plenty of racism, I am not dealing with people at a deep level nor looking for a job. Not going to defend Portenos now, there is good and bad everywhere. All I can see here is they are so proud of their Italian heritage for who knows why? Chinese-Korean-Japanese = all Chinese; Arab, Armenian, Turkish = all Turco. Some sort of identity crisis.
Armenians are NOT Turkic, thats ridiculously funny.

Armenians , Syrians and other Middle Eastern countries immigrants entered Argentina with Turkish Passports as part of the Ottoman Empire , before WW I . Therefore called generically Turcos....
