Any Tips For Tango Shows?

My guests have always enjoyed La Ventana. The downstairs theatre is better than the upstairs theatre. Skip the dinner and just go for the show.

Strange -- the website doesnt list the times. Do you know what time we should show up for just the show? I sent their email the same question.

I never recommend anything but La Ventana, unless they are very rich and truly love Tango. Then they can go to the Faena so that they can tell everyone back home that they went to the Faena. B)

Jajajaja!!! That's hilarious. I went to the show at Faena two years ago but I didn't brag about it. It was comped for us because my boyfriend was writing a story on the hotel for a travel magazine, but we would never shell out money for a "Tango Show."

Honestly, all the acrobatics bore me. No connection. Faked passion. Performers dancing the same crazy choreography night after night. Yawn. Would much rather be wrapped in the abrazo of a seasoned milonguero on the dance floor of a milonga. That's where the real tango's at.

This two places al real "milongas", in beautiful, traditional buildings. They have classes everyday for a very low price (something like $30) and you get to share with the real tangueros

Oh, DaltonMCB, we need to get you out of the tourist scene and into some traditional milongas where the codigos are followed and the milongueros are gentlemen, not wannabe teachers that prey on the naive tourists. :)

Traditional milongas don't want tourists who can't dance blocking the floor or, worse still, kicking everyone with their boleos and patadas. And most tourists would rather start at a place that's beginner/tourist friendly. Better to test your readiness at your local dance hall back home before taking to the pista of the traditional milongas here.

Absolutely true, Farenheit, there are certainly different milongas for different levels and styles. (Which is why I haven't publicly post the names and locations of my favorite milongas.) ;)

But there is also nothing wrong with a non-dancing tourist going to watch a "real" milonga (as long as they aren't being a distraction with their annoying camera flash.) You don't have to dance to enjoy a night at a milonga. I've taken non-dancing friends to my favorite milongas (I've even taken a porteño that had never been to a milonga before), and they loved the experience.

LA CATEDRAL... LA CATEDRAL LA CATEDRAL LA CATEDRAL!!!!!! (in Almagro)

The poor tango shows that a lot of tourists go to appear to get a fairly bad wrap here, I dont know why that and personally dont see the problem in going to a show for entertainment, touristy or not.

I was a ballroom dancer for years and actually did many floorshows myself, in addition to seeing some by the best pros in the world (that do competition) and others that are only stage dancers or "exhibition dancers" as others may be referred to. Depending on what you like, can be much more entertaining than rocking up to a studio and watching people practice, or going to a competition.

I think there is something to be gained / enjoyed by both visiting a milonga and going to a show here.

Great dancers and dining option. More local, not so turist!
