Does anyone have experience working with the consulates/embassies abroad to secure a temporary visa such as rentista or pensionado?

Advantages include having certainty before arriving and not having to deal with time constraints and switching from transitory visas (like tourist).

But disadvantages include unknown consulate processing wait times, documentation requirements, no local lawyer to advocate or assist on your behalf.

Anyone have experiences or information they can share?

I did it about 14 years ago.The biggest obstacle was the the consulate was totally disorganized. After waiting for the only officer in charge of visas to come back from a month's vacation, I was told that the rules on the website that I had been told to follow were incorrect. I pushed back, and as a result they simply took down the rules, but they also let me get a rentista visa without an FBI report. I tried tonight to reach a consulate website and none of them seem to be working. If you can find an Argentine consulate that will process the visa, it might work. Good luck.
