If you're spanish isn't that good, newspapers are a great way to learn. News readers articulate and speak more slowly than other presenters on television, so it's also a good way to get used to the accent.

And, really, it's also just a good way to integrate -- get local knowledge rather than just expat knowledge.

Maybe I'm just a news junky, but I can't imagine how insane this city would be if you didn't have a clue what was going on just because you didn't turn on a news channel or open a newspaper.
 
They were picking trash up yesterday in palermo and I saw a guy this morning sweeping up trash.
