On a similar note, I recall listening to a researcher many moons ago talk about that when the Automatic Dishwasher was invented it was initially thought the time savings would be an enormous help in enhancing quality family time. However, this researcher found among households who owned one that quality family time actually decreased. You see, manually washing dishes required the parent to be stationary and given the low intensity repetitive nature of the task, it often served as a moment to talk with the children about school or other family issues.
