Argentina’s Senate approves transgender job quota law

It does solve a major problem. That it helps them from resorting to prostitution and encourages them to study and be career minded like other people.
But are there enough jobs for the group being provided for? Not sure there are any stats for counting this group of people? (Would a census pick up on this???)

What determines transgender? If a (biologically sexed) man says he is a woman he can demand to be included in the 1% quota? Or does he have to prove that he has been living like a woman? And for how long? Wearing a dress and using woman's public bath/washrooms is enough or does he need to undertake partial or complete sex change treatment etc.

Alot of trans people have underlying pyschological issues and need help. The gender dysmorphia is a result not the cause of their unhappiness hence the extremely high suicide rate in post transition people. So how is that addressed? It's not. The new law is not progress. It's virtue signalling, crude politicking and actually illiberal and not ultimately helping those it is proposes to.

In Argentina it all comes down to self identity, there is no obligation to undergo surgery for example to be considered “trans” - same way a straight (or otherwise) male or female chooses to identify as a straight (or otherwise) male or female.

Argentina has allowed people to self identify and choose their gender since 2012 and the public health system even provides free gender reassignment surgeries and comprehensive emotional support for these people. So I would say that that side of the coin has well and truly been addressed for a decade now. Now people just need acceptance by others to get jobs and feel “normal“ rather than feel like a freak show/ abomination/ mental/ sex fetish in the eyes of society etc which is in itself a driver of unhappiness.

For those who are interested in trying to understand or empathize with this groups of people before criticizing them or their rights, google is a sea of information and statistics, stories about people who self identify as trans in Argentina. Even Netflix has award winning shows like “Pose” that show the human story of this group of people that go someway in removing stigma and stereotype.
One might actually learn something new.
