Argentina buys 24 of Denmark’s aging F-16 fighter jets

The UK doesn't complain because at this stage it doesn't really care. It has no soul or backbone. It's just a globalized shite hole. If the Argentines want the islands it doesn't need F16s. They just need to swamp it with civilians arriving on the beaches claiming asylum.
Does the new hate speech law apply there? Argentina could just accuse everyone on the islands of being racist against Argentinians and have them all arrested.

What's the point of this purchase?
This is the central question, indeed.
Presumably it's just a question of, every nation needs at least a certain minimal number of minimally viable fighter aircraft, and Argentina's military has been woefully neglected since the Malvinas war.

Personally, I'm inclined to think that a dozen maritime patrol aircraft with decent radar and other avionics would be more useful. Maybe Argentina could do something about the Mile 201 issue, which, (forgive me for saddling up my favorite hobby horse once again), is worth an estimated 2 or 3 billion USD per year just in squid, let alone the fish.

The last of the old P-2 Neptunes have been gone for 40 years

Off topic? I mean, this could turn into a nasty argument real quick, given how charged an issue that is.
Of course, TWB started it, but...

Back on topic... @Redpossum the initial plan was for it to be 38 F-16s from Denmark and 4 P-3 Orions from Norway Link 1. So there is maritime patrol included in this purchase.

It appears though that the P-3s had already been "purchased" in October 2023 Link 2 but have not been delivered as the first payment has not been made as of December 2023 and Norway refuse to release until payment is made. Link 3. Last I can find of these is that the navy is trying to resurrect the Grumman S-2Ts back into service as a stop gap while the payment issue is sorted on the P-3s Link 4 as of 16 February 2024.

Thanks for the info, and the impeccable links. I have to say, the P-3's seem horribly expensive for clapped out old hardware; your link 3 mentions that the P-3's are already decommissioned, and being pulled out of the Arizona boneyard. Yet the purchase price is 100 million, and another 50 million to get them refurbished and ready for service. For four units, that's some 37-38 million USD each. OUCH!

And this leaves Argentina at the mercy of an increasingly-fickle US for spare parts. Somebody here sneezes, Argentina get slapped with sanctions, and those aircraft are grounded. Regardless of your politics, you must admit that Congress has gone crazy overboard with the whole sanctions thing in the last decade.

It just seems to me that the same 150 million, or even half that much, would buy much more bang-for-the-buck from Embraer. And with the source of spare parts being right next door, and a fellow member of Mercosur. Not to mention that Brazil is far less sanctions-crazy.
