The usual Google Translate deal, banner is in Castellano and story will initially appear in that tongue, but wait a few seconds and it will change to English.
I would stress that the phrase "roast beef" in the headline is a severe mistranslation - the original article in Spanish says "asado".
I would also point out that this is not from C5N or Pagina12, this is a story from Channel 26.

Allow me to cite a few interesting quotes -

A report based on data provided by INDEC revealed that meat imports in the country increased significantly, but exports decreased, causing great uncertainty among Argentine producers.

Based on data from INDEC and analysis by economists, it was determined that Argentine food purchases from abroad grew by more than 150% in less than a year. In April, the trade surplus fell to one of its lowest levels.
According to the report, the trade surplus fell to its second-lowest peak of Javier Milei's administration , with the balance falling to just $204 million , about $1.6 billion below the figure for the same month the previous year.

The Argentine Institute for Agroindustrial Development reported that beef imports are on the rise: merchandise imports reached 1,200 tons per month , and in the case of the pork sector, they are expected to reach 5,700 tons by 2025. Beef exports fell by 30% .

when is it cheaper to buy meat than to raise it? when taxes, regulations, monopolies make commercial cattle farming unprofitable.

the next step may be to squeeze private farmers out of the market to give the land to monopolies.

If Milei thinks he can go up against the SRA and its counterparts, and win, or ignore their interests, he is in for a very rude awakening.

If he picks a fight with the cattle breeders, he is also picking a fight with the producers of soy and everything else agricultural, and retenciones from those people when they export is a big part of the federal government's annual revenue.

The price differences are stark according to this link. Unsure how to translate:

Meat prices are ridiculous. It’s cheaper for us to eat milanesa from a restaurant bodegón in Palermo than cook at home. It’s scandalous.

Tried to google translate, and that worked, but when I pasted the link here, that didn't work.

But here are a few juicy quotes -

Meat imports— pork , chicken, and beef—are at historic highs, part of a strategy aimed at controlling domestic prices.
Foreign purchases of beef were the most explosive. They increased ninefold during the first four months of the year compared to the January-April period of last year, according to official data.
Compared to the 576 tons imported in four months last year, this figure now stands at 5,300 tons, an increase of 820 percent.

To clarify the price issue : a kilo of Paraguayan meat arrives in Argentina at US$3.30 ($3,390). A kilo of Uruguayan meat delivered to Argentina costs US$3.80. And a kilo of Brazilian meat costs US$3.60. That's compared to the average price of a kilo of meat in Argentine butcher shops, which costs US$12."

Meat prices at Carrefour have been the same for all 2025, 4k - 6k pesos for a 2 pack of bife chorizo, my favorite type

Maybe it's more expensive at butchers but they are disgusting, the idiots behind the counter handling cash, raw chicken, touching everything in the shop, no gloves. Not that gloves would make a difference with their non existent standards. Yes in a normal country you pay more for premium butcher quality but Argentina isn't a normal country. A butcher here is most likely of anyone to give you C grade meat and food poisoning.

Edit to add they literally put their bare hands into a big pile of raw chicken and pull it out, after taking and counting your cash. Do they even do this in third world east Asian countries? Unbelievable

Someone at coworking place with me has 1500 head of cattle in entre ríos and says they’re getting historically high prices per kilo for them. $3usd compared to $1.5.

According to their online material, it’s about 11000 Pesos pero kg. Not an enormous difference.

Of course, you might find spontaneous special offers. Unfortunately Coto don’t include meat in their Friday reductions.
