Argentine Electronic Folklore

One of the unique things about Buenos Aires music is the existence of a group of musical polymaths.
Usually, in europe or the USA, a DJ is a DJ, y nada mas. Same thing for a guy who plays jazz, or folk, or who writes movie soundtracks, or who is a session musician- they are all separate, distinct careers, and most people take a lifetime to get good at ONE.
But in Buenos Aires, there are these people who do it all.
People like Gaby Kerpel, or Axel Krygier, who score musicals, write soundtracks, do house parties on acoustic guitar, play with jazz bands, sit in with Soda Stereo, drop mixtapes, DJ at raves, produce other bands, and pretty much do everything musical you can do.

Another guy like that is Ulises Conti.
He plays solo piano, he rocks out, he writes a lot of movie music, he collaborates with all kinds of people.

This album, he put out a few years ago with Lola Arias, is kind of non-categorizable, but like everything he does, pretty darn good.

hard to believe its from the same guy who does this performance art/solo piano piece that is hypnotizing and not rock at all-

Gaby Kerpel not only writes the music for shows like Fuerzabruta, and DJ's as King Coya, but he mixes it up with traditional singers like Balvina Ramos.

Poncho-

I gotta admit, when I heard about this band, I was suspicious- it sounded too much like some sort of industry planned modern day version of the Monkees- a guitar player from a band that was big 20 years ago, a famous radio disc jockey, and a theatrical approach that is kind of like Kiss or Gwar, but playing music that is more like Fat Boy Slim or LCD Soundsystem.
But I saw em play live, and I was convinced.

They are genuinely goofy, coming out onstage wearing ponchos (duh) and funny hats, and with gigantic cartoon video projections behind them of psychedelic llamas dancing in a Mooninites landscape lifted direct from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, its hard to not smile. Three older guys, capering around on stage, playing actual instruments, along with about a dozen synths, just having fun.
This video makes them seem much slicker than they are- this is a band you have to see live.
And, luckily, you have the chance- they will be playing at Plaza Del Congresso, on Sabado the 9th, free, at 23 hrs- How Argentine!
In the USA, a show like this would be at 2 in the afternoon, for "security" reasons.
They will, no doubt, truck in their gigantic stage set with video screens as big a my entire departmento, wear silly costumes, and totally rock out as only guys in their 40's can. Until they get so tired and sweaty they have to stop.

Jueves, at Matienzo, some music from Uruguay, featuring Eli-U.
midway between Brazil and Argentina, a lot of Uruguay music is a hybrid as well- lots of Brazil in her music.
