Maybe its just because I am old enough to remember when this type of music first came out in the sixties, but I am not that interested in retro blues like Pappo or Hector Starc- I mean, they were both great guitar players, but they didnt add that much, in my mind, to the original electric blues from the fifties and sixties in Chicago.
I am more interested in current wacky hybrids that are being made in Buenos Aires and Argentina- cumbia/electronic fusion, lesbian punk bands with surf rock guitarists, horn bands with synths, andean instruments mixed with laptops, stuff like that.
For instance, last year I saw Villa Diamante play with Milo and Smink- its a uniquely argentine mashup of beatbox, percussion, cumbia, electronic, rap, and rock.
You can hear a guitarist that sounds like Starc in every city on earth- yup, there are guys in Tokyo or Lagos who play the same sixties blues- but
this stuff is ONLY in Argentina- nothing like it anywhere else. Live, these guys are amazing. They are playing at Niceto in a couple of weeks with King Coya, who also is great.
