Average salary for TEFL teacher.

23 pesos an hour times 22 hours a week times 4 weeks is just over 2000 pesos a month. Can't live on that here. At least not the way you'd want to.

My maid make more than that per hour, she charges 25 pesos, 30 pesos per hour for once a week clients.

I'm a certified and experienced ESL instructor who's considering moving to BsAs to make a living there. Is it worth it? Now I wonder. I live in Santa Barbara, CA, but I'm barely making it on what I earn here. Any advice?

I've taught in both the U.S. (at a private school in San Francisco and a state university in FL) and Buenos Aires, and it was 1,000% easier to live on my income in the U.S. (plus, working conditions are much better.) Just to give you an idea of the wage gap: in the U.S., when I was just a TEFL-certified grad student, I earned $20/hr. When I received my M.A. in TESOL and began teaching at the university, the state had to start paying me $55/hr. In Buenos Aires, regardless of your qualifications, it's difficult to net more than USD10-11 per hour, while likely having to pay tourist rates for your apt. (USD500-800 if you want to live alone.) Plus you'll be paying more than you would in the U.S. for food, clothing, entertainment, etc.

I am a teacher in BA. I've heard that Wall Street is the worst institute to work for. $23 is a joke. Never accept anything less than $35- $40.

Thanks everyone for all your advice and opinions, it's so helpful.

Quite a few people have mentioned English institutes they know of which pay / treat their students better; could anyone give me a few names to go on? I think it might be back to the job hunt for me...

Christina.

Do not accept anything lower than 35 pesos an hour. There are many institutes looking for native speakers, and one with an actual certificate even more so.

E-living (http://www.elivingconsultancy.com/)
Pensaris (http://www.pensaris.com.ar/)
LanguageHub (http://www.languagehub.com.ar/)

also get on ZonaJobs (http://www.zonajobs.com.ar/postulante/welcome.do)
they have sooo many institutes looking for people. Also craigslist has a lot of offers.

Im serious though, NOTHING less than 35 pesos. You should make at least 40-45 pesos an hour, and if you dont, eventually you will. If you try and find enough institutes you can get twice as much money for the same amount of hours at wallstreet.

Posted this yesterday, but the post only showed up this morning, so going to bump:

Curious - what does ESL certified mean?
Is there a local/int'l body that does TEFL certification and recognized by all?
Assuming that it does exist, is it generally required for a job in the field?
And where does one get such a certification?

Hi

I am currently working for Wallstreet in Thailand and thinking about coming to BA next year. In Thailand Wallstreet are one of the best paying language schools so I was shocked by your post. Did you take the job? How are you getting on?

There are many many language institutes in BsAs that cater to Argie companies (and occasional individuals). Many are members of SEA ( http://www.idiomas.org.ar/ and http://www.spanishin...ish/centers.htm). These days (mid-late 2012) they are paying 45-50 pesos/hour to new native-English-speaking teachers with college degrees, sometimes 50+ to those with serious experience/certificates. I know because I just received an offer at 48 and am inexperienced and without certificate. I know of several native English speakers who went independent and have teaching experience and bachelors+ degrees, that earn 80-100 pesos/hour when they travel to the student's home. Your mentioned offer of 23 pesos/hour is completely out of line and insulting. At least for 2012. Run away from it, or as others suggested, work as a mucama for 25.

My son is just leaving the Peace Corp and is going to travel to the East. He is a cert TEFL teacher. Can you tell me the opportunity and wage he could expect in Bangkok?
