Being ambassador to Argentina is a political reward for fundraisers.
It really doesn't matter, the Chargé d'affaires runs things behind the scenes. For a long time that was Kevin Sullivan, but MaryKay Carlson holds the post now. If you look at that link and see the last paragraph, you will see she went to Georgetown and the War College, that means she's a heavyweight badass.
