Trying to make a muffin recipe that calls for buttermilk. Does anyone know if this is something available in markets and what it's called? Thank you!

Make your own! It takes all of 3 minutes and the heavy whipping cream here is ideal for it.

I bake all the time (especially muffins) and just use milk with lemon juice (in the link Iznogud shared). Works just fine!

I second the milk with lemon juice. i've never actually used real buttermilk before!

I was looking for it too, a while back, asked my argentine friends and they either said that they don't know what it is, or that they make it themselves. It is not to be found in the stores, they said...

Where do you think we are ... Alabama? As someone who grew up (in Alabama) eating loaf bread and buttermilk from a glass I can sympathize with your need for it. The lemon juice and milk will work. However, if anyone actually finds the real stuff let me know ... I'll bring the bread. :)

Even in the U.S., REAL buttermilk is very difficult to find. What is sold in the dairy isle of supermarkets is cultured buttermilk, an industrial version of the soured milk mentioned here. The milk and lemon juice performs identically in recipes for baking.
