I was missing a word in my post - but you got the jist from the following. Exchange at a cueva (which is commonly used here) and get the pesos.
Do you have resident status? If not, how are you insuring your car here? (There are ways but I don't know exactly how one goes about doing it).
To the person that asked - no, fees I mentioned don't include the inspection fees, etc. I also paid, IIRC, around 2500 pesos to do the transfer of the ownership. And I think 5 visits to get all the paperwork done correctly
And the tolls - have I mentioned the tolls? 24 pesos r/t into town. God forbid you have to get off the highway to get something and then get back on. It's a flat fee, whether you go 1 exit or 25.
(The only good thing about them - as earlyretirement said, they do hold their value quite well if/when you need to resell).
