Based on the "Virtual Numbers" in their menu, I would say they are probably as useful for 2FA as Google Voice, which you can get for free.

I did not post in a “typical computer user” thread or forum. I posted in baexpats where there is a diverse group of people, and I believe that some can follow the clear instructions. Here in this forum there are often questions asked about VPN or other advice on how to bypass a geo restricted internet issue as was asked in this thread. Though not the posted original subject title, so perhaps should be split to a new thread. Just let people decide to read or ignore for themselves.

My reply is not hi-tech, perhaps mid-tech. The instructions launch a remote VPN server into the one of many cloud providers (some which are free), or your own remote hardware. It needs little or no future management. It is an ideal alternative to the paid per month or free VPN services. Good for curious DIYrs or someone who does not want to trust some service running behind a curtain. Good for someone running a remote office here who needs to connect with other co-workers and devices somewhere else, which is the original reason to have a (V)ritual (P)rivate (N)etwork. It has been my primary VPN solution since the instructions were published years ago.

OK, here we go. If you want to run your own VPN server, first rent a VPS. After that, run an installation script like the following:


You will also need to learn some advanced Linux user skills like starting and stopping services from the command line and have a basic understanding of routing.

I am impressed. Still the reason I recommended my first solution is it does not need advanced Linux skills you mention, or a static always in the same location VPS. Your suggestions are also good for someone reading here to decide themselves. Gracias

I agree. VPN's are good for getting around some thing but many of the most popular services are recognized and their servers are in databases. If a bank catches you coming in through a known VPN, they will almost certainly block access and ask you for verification of your identity. Some just flat out refuse the connection from known VPN addresses.

It looks to me that you are calling veteran members of this forum 'DINOSAURS' and trying to antagonize old members and new members. This is not allowed. We value both old-timers and newcomers and encourage them both to contribute to the forum discussions.

What is this obsession with dinosaurs? The Natural Sciences Museum here in Buenos Aires has a very good paleontology section. Maybe you should visit it if you ever get to the city.
