If you are enjoying mate these days, keep in mind that, even when (at equal serving amounts) mate has less caffeine than coffee, if you stick around for long or repeated "mateadas", you'll be intaking lots of caffeine.
8 oz / 1 cup of brewed generic coffee has between 95 to 200 mg of caffeine. (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/caffeine/AN01211)
8 oz of brewed yerba mate has about 85 mg of caffeine (http://guayaki.com/mate/2601/FAQ.html)
8 oz of brewed mate is not that many mates, say 4 or 5 servings with a mid-size mate gourd.
The average Argentine adult intakes about 288 mg of caffeine a day, and mate is the main source of caffeine; while in the US, the average adult intakes 193 mg, mainly through coffee. (http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&AN=37141722&site=ehost-live)
