Cinemas in crisis: winter break ticket sales lowest in 15 years

I'm curious. Do they show Argentine movies, or do they import that Hollywood trash that I stopped watching years ago?
A lot of the larger cinemas import the hollywood garbage, but occasionally screen the larger-budget Argentine films (think those that feature Darín, etc...). But, if you check out Cine Gaumont, Cine Lorca, Cine Cacodelphia, Cine Cosmos and Sala Lugones (within the Teatro San Martin) you'll find the independent Argentine titles and some foreign films (indie flicks, smaller directors, cult classics).

These are antiquated, lovely cinemas that are half the price of the chain movie theaters. I go to see a matinee at one of them every week. Not all serve refreshments, but they're in the center of the downtown district. I make a whole day of it. Lunch at some ol' bodegon or pizza joint, ice cream at Cadore, movie.

They never mention these movie theaters in the write ups because they're affordable and it goes against the 'nobody can even be entertained in this economy' narrative. Same reason all the free-to-cheap music/theater/museums aren't often highlighted. The city is full of accessible culture, far more accessible than any major city I've lived in or visited, and loads of people partake. I know that budgeting is budgeting, one day soon I may not be able to afford my meager movie days each week, but for now it's possible. A movie at the cheaper theaters and an ice cream is less than a medialuna and latte at any number of coffee shops in Palermo these days. I fancy that a decent get.

Just to add to the list, Cine York in Martinez shows a range of both Argentine and international movies, though they're usually not new movies.
I love Cine York. Also, MALBA cinema at the museum runs local and international film cycles, always interesting as well. So much cinema to be had in this town!
