Good morning,

I apologize for my ignorance and if there's a dedicated thread about this topic please directly me to it. I used the search tool, but couldn't find one.

I've been a permanent resident since 2009, coming and going between the US and Argentina (mostly living in the US) but I've been back for a little over a year without leaving. I've been recently interested on finally becoming an Argentine citizen. I have consulted with 3 different immigration lawyers/attorneys and they all said I do not qualify because my income isn't earned in Argentina (I also cannot become monotributista).

I understand paying taxes is important, but is working legally in Argentina a requirement for citizenship? I'm not rich, I'm single and earn a decent wage to live okay. I don't have an issue with declaring my income to the Argentine government, but HR told me I cannot become a contractor, so therefore I cannot become a monotributista.

I feel so lost in this process.

DH works abroad, we just filed for him to get citizenship. When they ask for source of living we plan to enroll him on monotributo for some months. You can do it too, does not have to reflect what you really do for a living. Think " independent consultant " or " english teacher ". Not sure if you own property, but i would present my foreign job. We filed the last day of Dec. He has perm residency since 2005.

Also, it is very easy to file yourself, do not waste money.
Hi nikad, thank you for all of your very helpful posts! Can you tell us a little bit more about what you did to apply and how the process has been so far? Were you able to apply without first enrolling your husband as a monotributo? I'm also getting ready to apply but since I'm not yet a monotributo I thought I would need to do that and then wait some months before applying.

Who told you that your employee status in the US would disqualify you as a monotributista? I don't see what one has to do with another. If you are a permanent resident and you live in Argentina, and you work for a US company, and that US company is not paying you through an Argentine payroll processor, then you are a monotributista. How are you transferring your money down here? Do you have an Argentine bank account?

You are going to need to have, scan and send to [email protected]

- DNI or passport
- Domicile certificate issued by city Police ( up to 5 days old )
- Original birht certificate, apostilled, translated into Spanish by sworn translator and legalized by Colegio de Traductores Publicos.
- Your Argentine wife or children birth certificates if married to an Arg or have Arg children.
- This form https://old.pjn.gov.ar/publico/formulario.cartas.de.ciudadania.pdf fully completed and has to match your docs.

They will email you with the address and time to present all the originals and get it started.

It is even simpler: he can have a US job, and have a second job, self employed here as an English tutor, or consultant, or psychic. Nothing keeps him from being monotributista, it can be totally unrelated to his US job. No law says you need to be working in Argentina to become a citizen either, they basically just want to know you are not a criminal.

I will add, you don't need a local Argentine income (whether a regular job, or a monotributo). If you work online overseas, you can certify your foreign income via an accountants certificate here, that's what I did for my citizenship application.
