Has anyone ever tried this method? I'm wondering if planting a few plants in front of the non-screened balcony doors will have any impact on mosquitoes...or will they not be bothered and just fly past them?

Google says that the plants are not useful as an area repellent. The oil may be if applied to the skin, but has been banned in some e.u. countries for topical anti insect use (not sure why)

Making sure there is no standing water around is probably your best bet imho.

Good Luck.

We don't have a standing water problem, we have french balconies. I was looking to add some plants and was hoping that there were local plants that had some effectiveness against mosquitoes!

In Italy it is popular belief that geranium plants (also found here and cheap) are mosquitoes repellant. I cannot say if this is true or false because I had mosquitoes net, but I doubt that plants alone can help you with repelling mosquitoes.

We have large windows and no screens and found a product that worked fairly well for us. A few mosquitos did sneak through. It is called Agent X and is available in little discs with ahesive which you stick on windows and frames and contains citronela. I do not have the product available at the moment so cannot tell you about the other ingredients. They do smell like a strong citronela.
We bought these at Carrefor or Disco several months ago.
Hope this helps you.
