Yesterday I went for a day trip to Colonia and couldn't help noticing that they did more baggage checks than I have experienced during the last 12 border crossings that I have completed here in south america.

After scanning my rucksack through the x-ray machine, they then searched it (despite it being almost empty) and found hidden interior pockets that even I didn't know existed. After checking every single possible part of my rucksack they then proceeded to pass it on to the cute furry tax inspector who had a good sniff!

Funny thing was that when I got back on the late ferry, there were no checks at all, maybe it was past my new furry friends bed time!

The extreme check on passengers going from Argentina to Uruguay , is because of the fear of dollars leaving the country, not entering!!!!! Therefore the difference in the controls!

Thanks for spelling out what I thought we all already knew.

...Still can't get over how corrupt this government is and yet up until now, it's been accepted.

I know that 90% of the persons here know the situation, nevertheless, this newcomer did not! Therefore the explanation!!!

I was expecting the dogs on the way out but thought that whilst they want people to bring dollars in they might want to catch people bringing in the dollars to supply the black market (e.g. undeclared sums over $10k).

Also I can report that the Arg Peso buy rate was 40% higher than the sell rate in Colonia! How much further can this go? Is it going to get like Venezuela where the black market dollar is twice the price of the official dollar?
