Common question: need local cell

Hi all,

I am sure this gets asked a lot, but I searched the forums without finding the info I wanted.

I need a local cell. I currently have an old Motorola Razr with no SIM and an iPhone with a US number and international plan. I believe they are both locked.

I don't need a nice phone, just one to send and receive texts and make local calls.

Can anyone tell me where to go for a good deal?

I don't know how long you will stay here. This is a prepaid combo.
The price per minute isn't cheap: $1 to same company, $2 to others.

Thanks for that info. Do you need a permanent address to get on a plan here?

Hi. I've called Movistar. They 'say' that getting a plan is only for residents o for foreigners that have started the procedure to get the "DNI".
If you are not thinking about getting a perm residence, the let you get a pre-paid
Pre-paid are not so bad since you can add "packages" of free minutes, much cheaper that standard prepaid.

Although there are two alternatives:

1-Test your luck, mainly in an "official seller" who could sell you without being so strict
2-Ask someone who borrow their id. Specially doing over "phone sales", without showing the document.
