Does anyone know a good computer technician? I got a name from here before, talked to the man at the time and was really impressed, wrote his name and phone number somewhere for future reference and now I can't find it. I think I'd recognize it if I heard it again. But whether he does what I need is another matter.

My site has been hacked. AVG blocks it because of Exploit Black Hat SEO 1720 and no one can get into it. One subscriber said he did get in and it was full of viagra ads.

By now you know I like to support local people rather than the Philippines though I may resort to support (which is in the Philippines) if I have to. I know how to reformat my hard drive if that's all that can be done. I've been working on this for two days so it isn't simple. And thanks for any forthcoming suggestions I did a search for a computer technician here but nothing came up, strangely since I know I got a name before from here.

Arlean, welcome to the world of being hacked!

My partner and I have had a good month of being hacked by the same sort of thing - except it was first Kapersky and then Google (the worst problem to have!) that marked us as an attack site. We went through the logs on our server and fixed the issues as they came up, but they never completely went away. Although a web programmer, I'm not good at all on LAMP server stuff, or I'd help you directly (I'm a .Net guy and all the sites I've had for years, for businesses, have never been attacked!).

We ended up getting in touch with these guys: http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/scanner/

They have a free scan that will tell you exactly what issues you have and if you can give them FTP access they will actually clean your site (for a charge, of course). They did a spectacular job for us.

Hi ElQueso and thanks. I did the sucuri site check and it said it found no threats. But if I do the AVG scan it does. Plus subscribers who use AVG are contacting me as stated above because AVG is blocking them for opening the site at all. Oddly AVG pops up and says the site is dangerous, but that it was removed and that I'm protected, the site won't work, then it works for a while but then it pops up again--strangely it doesn't pop up all the time. It nearly killed me but I changed the theme at the host's suggestion thinking it might be in the theme so now there's a lot of work to be done to get it to work again. Oh woe! Computers are out to get us!

Plus the suggestion didn't work either.

No Gringoboy, sorry not to be clear. "Here" means on this web site. It's been about a year though and I carefully kept the info written--somewhere.

Arlean, i think you are mainly looking for a webmaster that can clean up your site and knows about site security, not a computer tech. I can recommend you one if you want, send me a PM.

I kind of wonder why AVG is blocking it but Sucuri is not. All the reports I have are from AVG people and my own AVG complains part of the time. A scan on the AVG site online picks it up--or says it does. But the fact they did a spectacular job is encouraging.

arlean, I'm running Avast and have no issues with your site. Stopped using AVG years ago after too many false positives. Suggest you try different AV solutions and decide wether u are infected or not.

There's a link somewhere of a site that has a large bunch of AV/antispyware programs and you only need to provide it with a link and it will scan it for you. Will try to find it.

There u go.

Methinks you might have talked to me, not absolutely certain.

My husband is a very good computer tech who works all around the city. He is bilingual in Sp and Eng. PM if you would like his contact info.

Hi y'all. Thank you so much. Every time I have a problem you come through for me. I have had several people contact me about doing web work and I'm trying to keep contact information--even if I don't need it right now, someone else might and I will hand out the list. Plus someday I hope to hire a webmaster so all this is good info.

In this case, my hosting company suspected it was in the template. I went to the Wordpress forum and saw a post from last June about this same problem. He had given his URL so I checked it, AVG did not alarm, so I wrote and asked him what he did. He said he changed the template and had had no trouble since. So, though it nearly killed me with all the work I had put in on the first template, I did the same and it shows up clean now. Lots of work to do now but at least it's up and running.

Thanks to everyone who contacted me offering help. Y'all are fantastic! Also, Iznogud (that name always makes me giggle) thanks for the heads up about AVG. I've been using it for years and this is the first problem. A friend LOVES Avast but I put it on my computer and the computer then runs so SLOW. When I took it off, I had my computer back. A friend that this same mutual friend put it on for her found the same thing. Her computer was painfully slow. I took it off for her and after that her computer acted normal. I don't know why that is unless Avast is a much bigger file. But if AVG gives me more trouble I'll try Avast again.

One thing, Avast is U.S. and, to my surprise, support for AVG was in the Philippines. You all know I believe in patronizing my neighbors and supporting the folks at home. Of course I don't live in the US any more but if it isn't here, then my second choice would be the U.S. So that weighs heavily with me. If we are paying them, then the jobs should go to Americans. (Yeah, I know, someone's going to get all upset with me for that but what else is new?????)

I lot of the expats here in BA use Ricardo - he's excellent. Of course he'll tell you the same thing as I will - to get rid of the virus (and ALL viruses forever) just DELETE windows and install LINUX - Ubuntu is the go :) Problem solved - permanently...
