Connecting Macbook Pro To Tv

Hello expats!

We recently bought an HDMI cable to connect our MacbookPro (2010) to Philips HDTV here in Argentina. After plugging in the cable, the TV says "no signal" and on the computer there is no sign that the TV is connected.... am I missing something? I thought it would connect right away (I'm not very tech-savvy, in case you couldn't tell). Does anyone have any experience with connecting a Mac to a TV? Any input will be much appreciated!!

I connect my Macbook to a Panasonic TV which requires me to change the setting from HDMI to "PC" (on the tv).

Is there an option to switch the input source? On my Samsung, I have to change the source from TV (if I'm using straight cable or from HDMI if I'm going through Cablevision's box) to PC.
