I know there have been a million threads posted on this subject so if anybody remembers a good one a can point me to the right search terms that would be great.

I want to get out of the city for a few hours tomorrow. Already been to tigre a bunch. Are there any other localities that I can get to by commuter train or colectivo that are worth a visit. A museum would be cool but just a big park could keep me entertained.

Thanks

Take a trip to La Plata, the city is really beautiful these days. I was there last week after not going for about 2 years and was really impressed. Looks like a small city in Europe.

Wow, you and I must have gone to two different La Platas then. The main plaza is nice but I wasn't all that impressed by the rest of the city. Although, it has been about 2 years since I've gone. Has it really changed that much in such a short amount of time?

Second on La Plata.
About a 1 hr. collectivo ride from the station in Retiro.

Small, walkable city.
Great museums. I really like the Natural History museum- its like going back in time, especially the skeleton rooms.
Its in a very nice park, with gardens and follies and outdoor restaurants.

the Cathedral is well worth a visit, too.
The tour to the top of the tower is great.

Its an easy one day trip, leave mid morning, hop on a return bus either before or after dinner.

9 Museos within about a mile of each other.

I think whether you like La Plata or not depends on you- I liked the architecture, which ranged from a lot of casa chorizos in a variety of styles, including art deco, up to brutalismo, which would be their public theater downtown.
I liked the sleepy, walkable quality, I loved Parque Bosque, I went to the automotive museum, which is actually pretty good,

I had a good asado outside in the parque, and in general I found it relaxing, pleasant, and very argentine in every way.
Good little art gallery there, too, which does artist residencies for foreign artists, so they have a show every couple months of an artist from abroad who has been living and working there-

the cemetery is supposed to be pretty good, too, a mini version of Recoleta.

And in La Plata there is a free open roof bus turistico yes FREE unlike the one here every Sat, Sun and holiday until March.Shows you all the sights!
La Plata gets my vote!

La Plata is good. I went last winter. Just somewhere easy, cheap and different to go to.

With star ratings:

Inside the city:

Boliviatown (*) and Feria de Mataderos (***) : The official downtown boliviano near the Liniers train station: 300 meters of restaurants, business, and lots and lots of inmigrants. Fun in Saturdays, good and cheap bolivian food. Feria de Mataderos: 10 minutes by bus from the Liniers train station, folkloric dances, Argentinian food (not only meat!), food market, music, and lots of fun people (and some tourists).

Close:

Lujan *** - National Basilica, Museum of National History and Transport, good meat, including that restaurant run by nuns.

Capilla del Señor **: Unbelievably peaceful little town so close from BA, and so far. Good restaurants, Recoleta-like cemetery, Provincial Museum of Journalism (or something like that).

Escobar and El Cazador neighbourhood *: Not too much to see, but has a nice view from above (weird in Buenos Aires) and the Paraná near by. It is like Tigre before it was gentrified, has a market near the river.

San Vicente *: From the Ezeiza highway going towards route 6, east of Cañuelas. Little town with a very little pond, and the summer house of Perón (**), a trip back to the 1950s, including Museum of Peronism, his tomb, interesting memorabilia and statues. The town denizens can direct you to a good restaurant in front of the railway (don´t remember the name).

Not so close:

Mercedes * : Nice town, nice "pulperia"-like bar one block from the main plaza, and 2 km from the center the last surviving real pulperia of Argentina (the bars of the gauchos in the 19th Century).

Navarro - Little provincial town with little lake, for a picnic and mate. In the way there General Las Heras is a little town with a based local population, a couple of nice restaurants, murals and I thin some Berni paintings (If I am not wrong Berni was born there).

San Antonio de Areco *** - Gaucho-chic, Palermo Gaucho, cool little city.

Chascomus or Monte - Nice towns with lakes, Monte (**) is a favorite of mine, the lake is two blocks from the main square, some nice places to eat, a couple of small museums.

Mmmmm, I don´t remember anymore right now.
