Real Time with Bill Maher: Interview with Bernie Sanders (July 29, 2016)

Janis,

Election days come and go, but the struggle for economic, social, racial and environmental justice continues. Together, we built something special and unprecedented through our presidential campaign. Now, we are going to take the next steps for our political revolution.

We are building a new organization called Our Revolution. Our goal will be the same as in our campaign: we must work to transform American society by making our political and economic systems work for all of us, not just the 1 percent.

Can you make a contribution to Our Revolution so that we can continue our critical work to take back our country from the billionaire class?

On the very first day of our campaign, I wrote to my supporters and said, "This campaign is not about Bernie Sanders. It's about a grassroots movement of Americans standing up and saying: 'Enough is enough. This country and our government belong to all of us, not just a handful of billionaires.'"

That is as true today as it was then. That is why Our Revolution will focus on three distinct areas of work:
1. Revitalizing American democracy by bringing millions of working people and young people into the political system.
2. Empowering the next generation of progressive leaders by inspiring, recruiting and supporting progressive candidates across the entire spectrum of government - from school board to the U.S. Senate.
3. Doing what the corporate media does not do: elevating political consciousness by educating the public about the most pressing issues confronting our nation and the bold solutions needed to address them.

Together we can revitalize our democracy, empower new progressive leaders, and educate the public about the critical issues facing our country. To get started, I need your help, Janis. Will you join me?

We have a lot to do together, Janis, and I'm glad you're with me.

In solidarity,

Bernie Sanders

Clinton, Sanders, Warren, and many Democrats oppose the TPP because it's bad for America. President Obama will try to get it through Congress after the election.

Janis --

You are invited to join Democrats Abroad for a "Stronger Together" Global Town Hall on Friday, September 16, beginning at 1 PM EST (US East Cost Time). This is a tremendous opportunity to hear directly from Democratic Party leaders Governor Howard Dean and (to be confirmed) Senator Elizabeth Warren -- as well as Hillary for America campaign officials -- from all parts of the Democratic Party spectrum about why it is vital for us to "come together" and elect Hillary Clinton as our next President and to take back Congress. You will also be hearing from Democrats Abroad leaders about what YOU can do to make that happen.

So please join us - RSVP HERE. But hurry, as space on the video-conference is limited.

Back in February, we had our first Global Town Hall with Bernie Sanders and Madeleine Albright, as Senator Sanders and Secretary Clinton were battling it out to win the votes of Democrats Abroad in our Global Primary. Over 2,000 people around the world joined us for that event. Now we have a chance to hear directly from our leaders about our battle with Donald Trump and the Republican forces of divisiveness and demonization and what we need to defeat them in 2016.

Here's the lineup for the Town Hall as it stands. You can check here for updates on speakers and other information and to RSVP. (Off the record discussion and not open to the press)

Governor Howard Dean, former Governor of Vermont, Presidential candidate in 2004 and former chair of the Democratic National Committee will be joining us at 1:30 PM EST to talk about the 2016 election and answer questions from participants.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator from Massachusetts, is expected to be joining us with a pre-recorded video message specifically for Democrats Abroad (to be confirmed)

And a rundown on the campaign from Clinton campaign officials, including:

Nick Carter (Coordinator of National Progressive Outreach, Vermont State Director and former Sanders campaign Political Outreach Director)

And:

Democrats Abroad International Chair Katie Solon (i.e., me) and
International Vice Chair Art Schankler

So please JOIN US for all or part of the Town Hall on the 16th. Remember, we are Stronger Together.

If you have trouble RSVPing, reply to this email and let us know.

Unbelievable! Today the Democratic superdelegates struck down the progressive candidates for DNC chair and appointed establishment favorite Tom Perez to lead the party instead.

The last two DNC chairs, Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Donna Brazile, helped rig the primary against Bernie Sanders. Now the man who urged Hillary Clinton to whitewash Bernie's campaign will run the DNC in 2018 and 2020.

Adding insult to injury, Hillary Clinton is making her comeback. She released a video yesterday announcing: "I'll be right there with you every step of the way" as we head into the future.

The Democratic Party has now made it perfectly clear that it will not be the vehicle for the political revolution.

As progressives, we have to show that our commitment to the struggling working people across this country is greater than our commitment to the Democratic Party.

Help move our CrowdPAC towards an impressive $100,000. The higher it climbs, the more attention it will bring our movement and the more it will terrify the establishment. You're donation to our new people's party will only go through if and when Bernie starts it.

The case for a new party is far stronger than the case for reforming the Democrats. Tonight and tomorrow, invite your friends to our Facebook and Twitter pages so that everyone knows that we don't have to put up with this anymore.

Share the articles and interviews on our website so that all progressives realize that there is a better way. Make sure everyone signs our petition to Bernie.

Together, we'll finish what we started on the campaign!

Janis,

Join Draft Bernie founder Nick Brana and legendary filmmaker and environmental activist Josh Fox for our national organizing kickoff call this Wednesday.

Josh blew the lid off fracking in the U.S. in 2010 with his oscar-nominated documentary Gasland. Now, fresh off the heels of his interview with Bernie Sanders this week, Josh will help launch our organizing campaign to draft the senator to a new people's party.

The conference begins at 9:30 pm EST on Wednesday 3/15 and marks the start of weekly Draft Bernie calls. We'll share campaign updates and discuss how we make a people's party a reality.
Bernie knows that we need the energy and enthusiasm of the progressive movement to succeed. If we show him that the momentum is with us, in favor of a new party, then he will launch it.

When Bernie started his presidential campaign, every traditional political force was against him: the media, the party, the big donors. He was a candidate with single-digit name recognition taking on a decades-long household name. A democratic socialist running in a nation scarred by half a century of Cold War propaganda.

Bernie started with nothing but his message and his integrity. Everything that followed — the quarter of a billion dollars he raised, the 13 million votes he got, his rise to most popular politician in the country — followed from his integrity.

We will never outspend the billionaires. But our integrity is a weapon that they have no answer to. Our movement wins when we cast out the logic of incrementalism and embrace a transformational vision and strategy.

Bernie ignited a political revolution in our country in just one year by boldly giving voice to the progressive views of the majority of the American people. Just imagine what we can accomplish in four.

In solidarity,

The Draft Bernie Team

Janis,
We are turning the tide of history.
Our movement is leading Bernie to reconsider whether the Democratic Party can be the vehicle of the political revolution. For the first time, Bernie recently said that the efforts to reform the Democratic Party may not succeed. He said that we might be right, and that the resistance to change inside the party may be too great.
For Bernie to say that, despite his monumental efforts to salvage the party, is a huge step in our direction. Take a moment to appreciate how difficult it is to confront that one’s approach might not succeed.
Often times, it is the most difficult part of moving to a new approach. After that, one’s mind opens to new possibilities. And Bernie has said that if the Democrats refuse to reform, “the action will be in a third party.”
The senator’s advisors and surrogates are watching us with great interest. Close advisors to Bernie have said that if he switches to a new strategy, he wants to be able to say that he did everything in his power to save the Democratic Party. He certainly has.
Join Our National Call Tomorrow
Many people don’t know that Bernie was drafted to run for president. The Progressive Democrats of America ran a campaign to draft Bernie for the Democratic primary. At first, Bernie was unconvinced. But soon he encountered more and more supporters at his events who encouraged him to run and cheered him on. Slowly but surely, Bernie grew more confident that people wanted him to run and embraced the idea. We are here today because of their devotion to drafting Bernie the first time.
Bernie won’t accept our invitation to start a new party right away. But as he sees supporters gathering at his events, cheering for him to lead a people’s party, he will grow more confident and start giving it serious consideration.
He will also realize that progressives are no longer willing to settle for a Democratic Party that is not moving to the left. A party that is doubling-down on the neoliberalism and rigged primaries that caused it to lose to Trump. A party that Americans consider less popular and more out of touch with the concerns of working people than Trump. A party that continues to shrink as Democrats increasingly become independents.
Bernie knows that whether he wants to reform the Democrats or start a new party, he needs the enthusiasm of the progressive movement to overcome the establishment — the enthusiasm that propelled his campaign. By showing him that the energy is in our growing movement for a people’s party, Bernie will understand that ours is the path to victory.
Always remember that the majority of Americans are progressive and they want a major new party. Moreover, Bernie is the most popular politician in the country and has very high favorability ratings with Democrats and independents. If Bernie starts a party that attracts just half of the Democrats and half of the independents, that will be the largest party in America by far — almost as large as the Democrats and Republicans combined.
Volunteer for a People's Party
In just three months, we've built a robust national field program with organizers and volunteers in nearly every state. Millions have read our articles and watched our interviews. Luminaries like Josh Fox and Cornel West have joined the movement. Revolutionaries like Nina Turner, Danny DeVito and Jane Sanders have expressed solidarity.

Join our national call at 9:30 pm EDT tomorrow and let's build on our incredible momentum and success. I'm pleased to announce that Steve Grumbine, the modern monetary theory economist and founder of Real Progressives, will be our guest star.

Bernie called us to the campaign. Now it’s our turn to call him to a people's party.

Let's finish what we started!

Nick Brana
