Digital Nomads: does Lisbon have any lessons for Buenos Aires?

I don’t think Buenos Aires will ever suffer this.

It’s always received international tourists, students and there already is a brecha when it comes to rents.

BA had its nomad boom back in 2022/23. It’s also a city and country where people are used to receiving foreigners. The culture is built on immigration, unlike in these other cities where outside influence is something new.

I just spent a month in Medellin and a week in Mexico City and there’s no comparison. In those cities, everything in gentrified as hell in certain areas, everything’s in English and it’s full of nomads and expats.

Poblado and Laureles in Medelline and Roma and Condesa in Mexico City. There’s always been Palermo and Recoleta in Buenos Aires.

BA is nothing like that. There have been moments where it’s been full of gringos, but it’s never got to that stage. I don’t think it will. .

The big difference is how far it is from everywhere. Mexico and Colombia are just a few hour flight from the US and Canada, while Spain and Portugal sit within Europe close to the UK, Germany etc.

BA is in the culo del mundo, 10 hours from the US, 13 hours from Europe, and far from everywhere else.

It’s a pity what’s happened elsewhere, it really ruins the experience. I don’t think we have to worry about it in BA.
