Disappointed with Food in Argentina

When I left London in 2015, my lunches/dinner were pad thai, chicken chow mein, chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, green thai curry, red thai curry, chilli con carne, burritos, paella, gyros.

Literally, picked up quickly in supermarket or “hole in the wall” during my lunch break or on way home from sports/classes/work at 9/10pm.

And I’m not talking about the crappy frozen/microwave ones, but rather fresh made in the kitchen that day. Half price often at night as they can’t sell it the next day.

About £4-£8 you’d pay depending on the place, maybe £5-£10 now, so $7-$13.

Here. At best, Rappi or PedidosYa. $15-$25k. Minimum.

Pizza, hamburgers, milanesa, empanadas on repeat,

And anything else is crappy, small portions, doubtful quality or ridiculously expensive .

And that’s not to mention those Chinese comida x peso ? 🤮 or those horrendous panchos and pebetes 🥴

I’m lucky as my retired mother-in-law cooks for us.

And literally, she’s from about Midday to 6pm doing the food, with an hour to eat for lunch.

5 hours per day cooking food, chopping vegetables, going to the carnicería to buy the meat, going to one verdulería to buy the tomato, another to buy the rúcula ‘cause it’s better quality, the panadería to get the bread. 🙄

Cook it all, wash the plates, and then start all over again for the dinner.

25 hours per week she spends buying food and cooking.

It’s stresses me out thinking about it.

So. Much. Work.

‘Cause if it not, what do you eat? Pizza; hamburgers, milanesas, empanadas, pizza, hamburger, milanesa, empanadas, pizza, hamburguesa, milanesa or empanadas.

For minimum $10 USD for small portion.

Once a week is fine. I actually pizza, hamburguesas, empanadas and milansa on the weekends. Once a week is fine. Just not every f**king day.

It’s also the “machista” culture still present, which it is across LatAm. The idea that the women stays home to cook.

It’s frustrating, but hey ho, there will always be culture shocks and I recognise it’s as much me and my personality.

Beef in Argentina is not grass fed and 90 percent is feedlot . In 2002 argentina had mainly grass fed meat and at any parilla it was superb. Now You have to pay top dollar for a decent steak much more than Even Australia !
I haven't experienced that.

Whatever I have come across has been grass fed. I think the grass fed, grain finish is for the export market.

Uruguay has mostly grass fed steak and a good patilla there in the mercado de Montevideo theor steaks are superb!!!!

According to this report from USDA from September, about 35% of Argentina's slaughtered meat.

USDA Report Sept 2025 - Livestock and Products Annual

Argentina exported 30% of production in 2024, and is estimated between 25-28% for 2025. So I'm guessing those overlapped.
However, given the higher prices for meat now and the larger export market, it can be worth expanding feedlot production as is also noted in the report.

The USDA report also indicated average carcass weights of the USA and 4 major producers
USA - 382 kg
Australia - 297 kg
Uruguay - 264 kg
Brazil - 247 kg
Argentina - 228 kg

Agreed on everything above but the "Machista" culture across LATAm. At least in Brazil(to which I just came from), the new generations, the women are nowhere near the level of the old woman "machista" culture of the past. My ex(36f) would never ever cook and actually didn't know how. I did all the cooking and yes it took from around 5 to 6 hours a day from start to finish. All of her Amigas were the exact same. Her mom however was very much of that culture because it's of the past. Those days are over. Maybe it still happens in lower class levels but middle and up it's done. They all preferred to eat out daily if they could, even if it took most their salary to do so. My ex's mother cooked her meals when I wasn't around or even ordered to go meals for her. Lol Machista is dead and gone.

5 to 6 hours a day cooking? WTF are you cooking?

We don't buy any meals ready made or takeways, except maybe a pizza on a Friday and don't spend anything like that long?

That’s not what he said. Read his post again more carefully.

My gosh. Here we go again. You claim to be British. Have you ever eaten British food? Just terrible. Then you indicate it's just too much work to develop relationships at the local vegetable proprietor? What are you even doing here? Don't answer - it's a rhetorical Q.
Having read the replies since, how do you reflect on or revise what you said?

There is a fine line though between doing the drudge work for someone else and cultivating a self-care skill like cooking. No one will cook for you as healthily as you can. Agreed that traditional foods needed a lot of cooking time but no need to cook them or if you do batch cook them so you have things in the freezer.

British food has about as much variance in quality as Argy food if you include all the piss poor food you get in chain pubs.
