Just because Argentina has soja and other commodities doesnt mean f all if the country is unable to harness the benefits appropriately. There are a list a mile long of countries with extraordinary natural resources which for one reason or another has not translated to a good standard of living (without the gap of rich to poor) for its inhabitants. Look no further than Venezuela (oil).

Perhaps Argentines dont have the work ethic of the Chinese but they do bring a lot of other qualities to the table. They have a well educated population, creative people and they can certainly talk the talk. They just need a government with some stability, half a brain and less corruption and they will be heading in a positive direction (aka Chile) in no time.

Actually having a lot of natural resources might hurt the economy, search the Internet for the "Dutch disease" to find out more. In short, the exported natural resources may strengthen the currency, which make the rest of the economy less competitive.

Yep, dutch disease is very simplistic though. High demand for resources has meant commodity based developed economies have generally been the strongest performers over the past few years (Australia is probably a good example).

One poster recently noted in another thread Arg was one of the world leaders in strategic commodity resources. If it can manage things properly, it certainly has the tools to be well ahead of where it is now.
