Dollar Exchange Question

I think you have the right idea but it's not wanting as much as needing. If a travel agent sells you a ticket to Tokyo, they need to pay the airline in USDs, United doesn't want a truckload of Rocas.
Wonder how Argentina's national airline Aerolíneas Argentinas works with the FX market: settling sales in US dollars? Seems like one fat money laundering deal to obtain US dollars from the treasury. It is an Argentine based airline budgeted in pesos. Does not compute for me: sales computed in dollars.

Yes and no when Aerolineas sells a ticket to NY in US dollars must obtain dollars from Treasury to remit dollars abroad to pay all associated expenses and service providers overseas. A sale in say cash dollars at their local offices is converted and entered into the books in pesos at the official rate.

After which the Camporistas head to the closest cueva to skim off their profit.

Ambito Fianciero quotes today that JP Morrgan has predicted and official dollar of $9,20 for the end of 2014 , so assuming a 40 % gap the Blue should be at $13,20 or so. Makes sense if inflation is 30% and the Blue is now like $10 pesos--

PD: For oficialistas, what does J P Morgan know they were wrong in not predicting the 2008 Lehman Bros. crisis.

I used Xoom on my previous two visits which worked perfectly for me and I was happy with the exchange rate eventhough 15-20% less than on Florida.

An Argentine friend offered to introduce me to their Florida Street banker. I received 9.4 for my 20's. 100's, I quess pristine would be best, would have yielded me 9.7.

If you are not comfortable bringing/walking around with 'a lot' of cash from the States I suggest looking into Xoom. Otherwise I agree with others who have recommended 100's and having an Argentine friend to introduce you on your first visit.

As a by the way, I had two $20s stuck together and the extra $20 was returned to me. I was surprised and pleased; I would not have known that I had overpaid. Being 'introduced' may allay your fears of getting bad bills and/or having a 'bad' experience.

Reading through this thread, it seems the best is to go to Calle Florida or Casa Rosada. Or ask the hotel staff?
I'm heading for a bit over a week and much rather use cash than any credit cards.

Oh, and I read somewhere that now foreigners have to use a credit card or US cash for travel/tours. Is that true?

The Casa Rosada thing was supposed to be a joke... :( Please don't go there because THIS works there. It is known to cook innocent tourists in a big pot of botox and apply the mixture to its face!
