Dueno says they are now calculating the $ at 4.65

this annoying attitude of my fellow Argentineans makes me sick, always trying to squeeze foreigners and Argentineans living abroad. Experiences like this makes me reassure I won't rent a flat for my own but rather rent with others a flat with an existing contract.

I really appreciate all the feedback. I sent an email to the dueno saying that I can't move forward due to a lack of trust and that I would like my $1800 pesos back. I told them I think it's better that I find a new place and they re-post on craigslist for the price they really want.

I realize I may not get my deposit back and will consider going to the AFIP. At the same time, this owner who is renting the department privately, also is the manager of a VERY high end inmobilaria, so I might just be needing to post a warning on this site. We'll see.

Separately, I am again looking for a place near Plaza Italia or Villa Crespo and can pay $850/mo. So, if anyone has any leads, please pm me.

Thanks!

What a shame, I would have totally rode the Argentine gravy train with her f'ing apartment. Since people have tried to screw me over sooooo many times here (most times they weren't succesful, but 3 times they were), I now consider it a sport.......TIT for TAT!

And honestly, if she is going to be this much of a PITA before you move in, I might be doing my best to get out of the lease. Doesn't bode well for the future.

I totally agree with this, if there a even a small problem when i visit an apt i am interesting in renting (eg: not like what the photos show, in a different barrio to what they say - barrio creep, double bed instead of king like as advertised etc) i steer clear, if they are telling me a small lie and being dishonest, what else do they hide, or will they try to get up to... I have heard so many stories of people being screwed by landlords/ladies here.

And please if she doesnt give you your deposit back go to the AFIP, because otherwise she will think she can get away with this and the next new person to this country who rents from her - she will try to screw.

I have another idea, if she doesn't return your deposit, lets PROTEST in front of her house / apartment and if it's an inmobiliaria, let's protest in front of their office too. I did this once for the assholes who were my landlords when I rented my store, they cut the crap once I started exposing them. You can also post about them on this facebook page, "Transpariencia Inmobiliaria". The guy who owns the page is a specialist on "outing" crooked inmobiliarias.

If she doesn't give back your deposit, I'd suggest that you consider publishing her name and the address of the apartment, so that people know to avoid her. The real estate agency would be good too. You might want to explain to her that this is what happens when tourists in Buenos Aires get scammed.

A high end realtor? I'd give her 48 hours to respond and confirm you're getting your money back. If anything but that happens, I'd inform her in writing that she has 48 hours to reconsider. If you don't have cash in hand in 48 hours you will go to AFIP and report your issue and the fact that her organization is participating in the black market.

Hello
You have to pay dollars at the official rate set by Banco de la Nacion Argentina and not by a rate set by the owner or the tennant. This should be clearly stated in every contract you sign. Iam a local I rent a flat I have never had a problem and is stated in the contract as well as paying in dollars is not compulsory you can pay in pesos and always always at the rate set by Banco de la Naciòn Argentina.

If she doesn`t give you back the deposit tell her you could easily publish her name and the flat address in every webpage popular on the expat community and she will think it twice....

You can send a carta documento saying that you are going to deposit the money at Court and you can discuss with him, the judge and the AFIP at Court. This should be enough.
