My sister is coming to visit from the U.S. in a week and she just realized her passport expires in 3 months - according to Argentine law - it must not expire within 6 months. Has anyone had experience with this? She's only staying for a few weeks and has a return ticket before her passport actually expires.

Where did you read about the Argentine law requiring 6 months on your passport? Can you post a link?

I've never had experience with it in Argentina. But some years ago I had a ticket from Sydney to London. I couldn't even get past the check-in in Sydney. They told me international law required all passangers to have 6 months on their passport.

And I often buy air tickets on-line through e-dreams in Barcelona. Obviously they never see me or my passport. So, when they email me my e-ticket, it's always accompanied with a message saying it's my responsibility to ensure I have at least 6 months left on my passport. And the tickets I've bought through them have been for many destinations all over the world - including in and out of Argentina.

So I think your sister needs to get a new passport asap

Well, I don't know how it works all over the world, but I do have first hand experience entering the country with a passport that did not have 6 months left. But I am not a lawyer although we did consult an Argentine lawyer.

Having said that, if she has time, she should get a new passport.

Three months is plenty of time to renew a passport, tell her to get on it. Better safe than sorry!

Oh, crap... just realized I misread that. So she comes in a week... meh, it's Argentina. They'll probably let her in.

You got some bad information, the passport must be valid for 3 months beyond her stay not 6 so she might be ok. Also if it isn't valid they won't let her on the plane to begin with, you don't have to worry about being admitted in Argentina. I would double check the dates so she doesn't waste a trip to the airport.

Also, it is possible to renew your passport the same day in the U.S. You need to go to your nearest local passport office (which may not be very close), and show your flight ticket leaving in a few days. You will need to pay expedite fees, and get new pictures, but it will get done in a matter of a few hours.

Sorry. You also have bad information. The only requirement is that the passport be "valid". There are no particular months of validity requirement at all.
