Family, inspiration and intimacy: Borges’ love for English

There’s a really quite nice chapter of The Old Patagonian Express by Paul Theroux telling of his conversations with Borges

I don't know if anyone on this board is Anglo-Argentine. I was hosted at an Airbnb 10 years ago by one. We spoke in Spanish. But one day, her mother (well into her 80s) called by, and I overheard them conversing in English. And I felt as if I were overhearing a conversation written by Oscar Wilde. Later I mentioned this to my host, and she said that she was aware they spoke an archaic dialect of English and used old words, like "ice chest" for the refrigerator. I've only met a couple of Anglo-Argentines since, but they both spoke in a similar way.
