First cases of the BA.3.2 variant of COVID-19 were detected in ARG

These are three cases of residents of the Province of BA that were detected from samples taken between April 26 and July 18.

They were identified through the genomic surveillance system of the ANLIS Malbrán Institute. The Ministry of Health clarified that, for the moment, the new lineage does not represent a substantial additional risk to health. As specified in the National Epidemiological Bulletin (BEN), the samples studied correspond to four-weeks 5 to 7 (from April 26 to July 18, 2026), a period in which 21 genomes were sequenced, of which 14% (3 cases) were positive for this variant. Of these 3 cases only one required hospitalization due to pre-existing conditions. All 3 have since recovered. The available assessment indicates that BA.3.2 does not currently pose a substantial additional health risk, although it warrants continued virological, epidemiological, and severity indicator surveillance.

This lineage was first detected in November 2024 in South Africa, descends from Omicron BA.3 and was classified globally as a Variant Under Monitoring (VUM), according to the BEN, which added that, so far, in the Region of the Americas, cases had only been registered in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and French Guiana.


The detection of this sublineage in ARG highlights the detection capacity of the country's genomic surveillance system and underscores the importance of continuing to monitor the genomic characterization of SARS-CoV-2 in order to detect the introduction of new variants and monitor their behavior in relation to transmissibility, severity, and potential impact of prevention and control measures.

Although the BEN indicated that the general circulation of SARS-CoV-2 in the country is currently at low and stable levels, given the appearance of the first local cases, the Ministry of Health stressed the importance of maintaining virological, epidemiological and severity indicator surveillance, with the aim of closely monitoring the transmissibility, severity and behavior of BA.3.2.
