Hi all,

I have to fly to Rio de Janeiro for a conference. My understanding is that I need to have my flights and hotels reserved before going to apply for the U.S. visa.

Can anyone recommend any websites where one can by reliable, safe, and affordable flights to Brazil? By reliable, I mean that the ticket exists and is guaranteed; by safe, I mean a ticket on an airline that has a good safety track record; and by affordable, I mean reasonably priced. In other words, is there an Orbitz or Expedia for South America?

Thanks,
Jenn

Right, sorry-- I was typing hastily. I meant the Brazilian visa that is required for U.S. citizens.

Have you tried Expedia.com? You can book flights from EZE to RIO there and get your e-ticket.

If not, then go directly to the airline websites. There are three big carriers w/ non--stop to RIO:

TAM: http://www.tam.com.br/

LAN: http://www.lan.com/ (my favorite)

Aerolineas: http://www.aerolineas.com.ar/

Good luck with the Visa. Have all your papers in order, and don't get frustrated if they send you back for more, time and time again. The local Brazilian consulate can be a REAL pain in the @rse when it comes to visas. They love to have "fun" with american, australian, etc, citizens (probably to "teach" them a lesson, because of reciprocity visa requirements).

Sorry, just joking around.

I've had good experiences flying Pluna, the Uruguayan airline between Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo [the also fly to Rio].

Their fares are usually cheaper than what you find on Expedia. You have to make a stop over in Montevideo. They've got a fleet of brand new Bombardier jets. The best part is that they fly out of Aeroparque instead of Ezezia so you have about 100 pesos on your taxi each way.

Their website:

cheers!

btw, Crucero del Norte also runs a bus service between Retiro and Rio. It's about 40 hours. I've done it. You get to see a lot of soy beans...

Was the bus ride from Retiro to Rio safe? I'm concerned about Brazil, mostly. I want to do this because plane tickets are so expensive. However, I heard that even stopping for stop signs in Brazil is dangerous at night...
