Flying a cat FROM Argentina TO the USA

To make this thread even more ridiculous

Do cats need a microchip when entering the States? Also did anyone mention where they managed to get a cat carrier that is allowed by the airline? I'm thinking of flying on American Airlines to JFK with my Argentine cat since they have direct flights.

pfff, i thought this was about someone trying to sail a CATamaran (F18) on foils (flying) from Argentina to US hehehe, that would be a bold and interesting story :p

I can't find a darn cat carrier anywhere in Buenos Aires that's excepted by any airline. Does anyone know where to find a transportin de gato? I guess if they're not nationally made I'm out of luck?

On Monday I was at Ezeiza to "ship out" my guests and standing in queue there was a lady with a cat in a carrier boarding the plane. The cat was in a backpack with wheels and a retractable handle, such as those backpacks for kids that are to be carried by hand rather than worn over.
It was specifically for pets since it had openings with a solid net. I have to say that the adult cat (about 4 kg) looked a little constrained in there. I can't tell if the cat was flying on Alitalia to Rome as my guests, since it was on a different queue than my guests and AFAIK Alitalia doesn't accept pets aboard (at least until last year it didn't).

Each airline has their rules about carriers: some want it soft, often want it hard, etc.
I have a Sturdi Bag bought in Europe (and made in the US) but there is a cheaper option called Sherpa (http://www.amazon.co...1_t1_B002N65VPI)

What airline are you interested into?

Thank you Serafina. I'm thinking of flying American Airlines since I get miles and they have a direct flight to JFK. I'm worried about how to get a Sherpa in Argentina since nothing is imported.

I know, I know. Try looking on Mercadolibre, that's all I can say.

Are you also coming back or just going out? Maybe I can lend you my Sturdi

Thank you Serafina for the offer. I appreciate your kindness. I'm planning on moving from Argentina. The cat has been with me through good and bad times and I just can't leave him behind. I might have to try and find someone to bring me a Sturdi from abroad.
