I think you'll find the tropical islands which are not independent are also uk overseas territories.

You may be right, but I've frequently heard it referred to as 'island' on my trips there. Even Wikipedia mentions it: "As documented in the earliest colonial sources, the island of Cancún was originally known to its Maya inhabitants as Nizuc" and "When development was started on January 23, 1970, Isla Cancún had only three residents."
