Recently, I asked about 3D TVs here and got some great advice.

I have decided to purchase a Samsung 40" LED TV UNC40C5000 (Full HD but not 3D or "SMART").

The most "basic" model presently offered in Argentina by both Fravega and Garbarino was actually a 2012 model in the USA and is no longer featued on the Samsung website.

The best thing about this is that there are many product reviews for this model on amazon.

Both Fravega and Garbarino are offering the same model this weekend for purchase with 12 payments at "0" interest.

The price from Garbarino is $6999 pesos and the price from Fravega is $5999 pesos.

Fravega charges a few dollars more for delivery, but, obviously I am going to buy the TV from them.

Rodo doesn't have the same Samsung model available, but often their "regular" price is the same as Garbarino's "sale" price.

In a normal place you would go to each and barter them down as they would have various price match things in place. You could then go to a smaller specialist shop and get it for the same price but with some extras thrown in.

Unfortunately this isn't a normal place.

Live n let live. Don't squeeze the merchants too hard, they need to pay for over-head and employees...

Best if one can find " How muh " is the _invoice_ of that product then making an reasonable offer...

And in a "normal" place the price of the TV would be less than $400 USD, not $600-$700.

Agreed. #1 shock moving to Argentina: no bartering. Utterly uncivilised.

Rooney: How much for the turnips?

Verdulero: 3 pesos each.

Rooney: OK, how much if I buy 6?

Verdulero: 18 pesos.

Rooney: What about a dozen?

Verdulero: Uh, that would be 36 pesos.

Rooney: Do you know if there are flights from EZE to Marrakesh?

I know, I know, and bartering is such a respectably proletarian, "peasants and workers" type of thing, it makes no sense.

Fravega's price is $400 pesos less than the lowest price advertised for the "same" model on mercado libre.

I don't think I will find anything cheaper in my area, where prices are usually higher than in the Capital, except occasionally in the structurally evil corporate chain stores.

Fixed or Agreed-Upon Prices. Competition is Unfair.

That's where the lack of bartering comes from.

The other day I went to Disco and was buying groceries for the week. My family likes powdered juices (they're cheap!). They had a sign up for boxes of the powdered Tang packets for 36 pesos a box. The individual packets were 2.46. 18 items in the box. I thought I saw a miracle happening, where there was a HUGE discount for buying in bulk so I grabbed three boxes of different flavors. Went to the cash register and the boxes wouldn't ring up. No price. I insisted that there was a sign back there with the price on it. Cashier calls over the manager, who tries to ring it up with the scanner, still no luck. I tell the manager the same thing about the sign, she doesn't even say anything, just walks away. The cashier looks at me and says, "I'll ring the box up as 18 individuals packets." I said "Hell no" and put the juice off to the side. I'm getting better - I would have sat there and argued for at least 10 minutes before, but I knew it wouldn't do any good.

Steve, sorry if I hijacked your thread about the price of the TVs!

Totally. I ran into the same unwillingness to barter for a nearly expired palette of Fresca in a Kroger in Aurburn Hills Michigan, and found a similar unwillingness to haggle in Stop and Shop and Safeway. I can only assume this is due to the massive government subsidies for corn syrup and the Fed's constant manipulation of the commodities market.

Did you omit the line "Verdulero starts thinking intensively until he picks up his calculator and types in 3*6" ;)
