I want to try and make some pickles but I can't find fresh Dill here. Just dried dill seed.

I was wondering if anyone has seen any in the country. If so, could you please give me a general idea.
Thanks!

I've had luck finding it at Tina&Co (refrigerated section toward the back of the first floor) and other shops in Barrio Chino. Sometimes if you ask for it in the smaller neighborhood veg shops they'll also have it stored in back and go grab some for ya. It's hit or miss and in and out of stock. I'm a huge dill fan so I know the struggle. Happy hunting! I've been luckier in summer months, so hoping you can find some.

Its seasonal. so not always available.
In my neighborhood, the Bolivian or Paraguayan verdulerias often have it, and I saw it on sunday, at the feria de ciudad pop up trailer market in retiro, so its around.
In CABA, most Verdulerias go a couple times weekly, many daily, to Mercado Central, and will often get it for you if you ask, and are willing to wait a day or two.
We have a couple jars of spicy garlic fridge pickles just about ready to eat right now- we use small red chili's, and let em age in the fridge a month or two before we consider them ready...

Curious about the pickles, are they more normal size pickles or just the long cucumbers? do you cut them down?
I'm struggling to find 4-5" cucumbers.

I think you will have difficulty finding short cucumbers, the ones I find are medium - long sized. Which is fine too, if you want sliced, or you can quarter them lengthwise and chop to fit your jar. A lot of people peel the cucumbers, it might be safer.

I've made lots of fridge pickles in my time, and they're great, now I need to go to the next level and make fermented pickles. They seem to need more salt, though, which doesn't suit me. And definitely no sugar.

As people have suggested, you might find dill in the fridge of one of the Bolivian-run verdulerias. I've also seen it in Coto and Disco in sealed plastic trays.

I might make a batch of tomato sauce (passata) this weekend, I got some jars from ML, and the veggie places around here have lots of tomatoes 🙂

I am not in BA so I'll check in the market and some of the "finer" verdulerias in town again and see if they can get some in a future shipment, or I will get it next time I am in BA.

I have never fermented pickles before but that is the plan. I want to try and make something like Strubs Sour Kosher Dill Pickles.

I'll have a look out for the cucumber scenario over here.
The one thing I have read is you need to cut off at least 1 end of the cucumber.

Hi, I’ve been searching for the same. Surprisingly, rappi turbo market has stocked it recently. Not every day though… barrio chino (I think the shop is called Casa china?) has it pretty often, and another one of the big shops superchunghwa has it too - look in the fridges at the back of the shop in both. Jumbo puerto madero sometimes stocks it too. Hope you find it 😃

I'd check out Barrio Chino or a major supermarket for fresh herbs; what's available varies by season naturally. Are you specifically interested in dill pickles, as there are other types not requiring fresh dill? I often make bread and butter pickles (sweet and sour), requiring readily accessible ingredients and a short curing time. Great for sandwiches and things like tartar sauce (to which perhaps I'd add dried dill weed).

I'm happy to know that someone's making things like this. Do-it-yourself applies to more than construction, especially in Argentina.

I really want to make a good dill pickle. I can't buy them here, There was a German pickle available but not anymore, and the others are just vinegar/refrigerator style which are too different.

Are the ones you make the ones typically on sandwiches/burgers?
Do you mind sharing your recipe. Its worth a shot.

The bolivian verdularias sometimes have real pickling cukes, 4” long or so. Again, seasonal. The big problem is no real pickling jar lids, the two part style that really seal in boiling water. Instead we use the glass jars with a glass top and the wire clamp mechanism, which you can buy on mercado libre. But we only make fridge pickles here.
