Getting books...in English!

Yeah, if you want to be able to read what you want, when you want it, just suck it up and get the e-reader. I have a nook and didn't think I would love it so much but the convenience is amazing. Also being able to carry 10+ books in my tiny purse rather than a heavy carry on is priceless.

There is an English book store on Avenida La Plata and Rivadavia called English Books for Everyone... It has a great selection... Worth a look

Its actually a branch of Kell..great kids selection at least...

El Queso - thanks for the info on USABox - Have you ever sent your self something more valuable, like...an iPad or pair of shoes? would be a lucrative way to get stuff in no? (and probably very risky)

Moving to BA in two weeks. Trying to figure out where/what to get in the way of a data plan for my iPad so I can buy books on line from there. Any suggestions? The AT&T international plan I can buy here seems pretty expensive. Cheaper local plan available?

Huxley - sorry, didn't see your question on this some time ago.

I wouldn't necessarily worry about something valuable sent in via DHL disappearing. The packages are pretty well controlled when using a courier. However, particularly in this time, I don't think I would try to bring in anything that has to do with electronics, and maybe not clothes. You might be ok, but I haven't tried that.

You can probably still do it, and things imported for personal use will probably be retrievable, but you'll certainly have to pay import duties.

The big thing is, I don't want to go sit out at Ezeiza for a day trying to get my package and deal with all the crap that you have to deal with.

But I've never sent things like this to myself for fear of the complications.

If you are not looking for the latest and do not mind pre-owned, there's a second hand bookstore inside the Galeria at Sta Fe and Pueyrredon, lower level. You can access the Galeria from both avenues.

I don't know about data plans aside from cell phones.

However, you can easily connect to a WiFi - either in your apartment if the owners set up a wireless router (assuming temporary rental) or Starbuck's, McDonald's, Havana and many other places - plenty of public WiFi.

I have an iPad that I use for reading. I've tried to find books in English here and haven't been able to find much that I find interesting - the selection is not very big for the most part. Although Iznogud's second-hand book shop may have more variety possibly.
