Graffiti

Good thread. Sure flippinkittin, there is some "Bad" graffiti in this city, and some great stuff. Like sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs, etc., its up to you to decide whether you like it or not. In my opinion you will find the best street art in this city in Chacarita. When I lived over there it seemed as if there were huge murals going up left and right each week. Near Jorge Newbury, there is an electrical plant and a park where every wall is covered. As I am leaving in 10 days, I am probably going to return there this week, and if you want I can post the address. As well, on calle Castillo, close to the train tracks (also in Chacarita), there is a bus terminal, the last stop for a few collectivos, where there is a lot of good graffiti. Lastly, as pointed out by BAJoe, around the hospital de ninos there is a lot of stuff. Unfortunately in this area you have people coming around sabatoging some really nice work by tagging up all over it.
Here is graffiti photos of mine from these 3 locations: http://www.flickr.com/photos/evanbrowning/sets/72157607017496569/

Here's some I took in Once at Bologne Sur Mer:

There's also some along the highway in Barracas that's awesome.

If you check out these, you'll see some great ones:

If your interested in grafiti, definitely go on the grafiti mundo tour. Its really interesting and not your usual touristy tour.

I agree there is some really shit stuff about though, particularly the stencil guy who thinks he's bansky

Hey group,

I have to admit there is some BAD graffiti in the city, but there is also some great artwork. I would like to have a photo album of all of the great graffiti in the city. Where is your favorite piece located? Although I do appreciate Bush with Mickey Mouse tags, I am thinking more along the line of the creative artwork that peppers the walls. Thanks for your input =)

First step for everyone is separating the terms used. Graffiti is just the senseless tags you see everywhere, the Miguel heart Josafina garbage, and the poor attempts at political commentary via an amateur scribble devoid of creativity. that's all graffiti. What you are referring to is "street art". And there's lots of good art in BA. It's pretty middle of the road on an international scale, but still very good. The difference is that street art contains creativity. If it's to pass on a political message, it's done so in a way to get a point across. But many times, the street art here, as in many places, is to fill a visual void. As someone else mentioned, there's a walking tour in BA people should take.

I'm looking into going on a graffimundo tour. There are two; the group tour which covers the streets of Colegiales, Villa Crespo & Palermo and The hidden walls tours which covers La Boca, Barracas , Almagro & Palermo.
Any idea which one would be better??

Well all, maybe you will redefine graffiti when some gang defaces YOUR walls with spray paint and you have to pay for it to be removed! Street art is one thing"with the prermission of the wall's owner" and vandalism is another thing! Graffiti is a form of self identity! when someone spraypaints their "TAG" on your wall, it is their cry for you to know who they are! Many times their parents barely know their names....have no idea what they are thinking....just walking through life grasping on to what identity they can find......ok 25 pesos for a can of spraypaint and SOMEONE will know who I AM! There are so many public walls here, there are so many grafitti artists that have actual talent, there are so many kids that want an identity.......why don't we just use these ingredients and bake a great cake! When I lived in Miami there was a BIG problem with graffiti and finally we came up with a solution,,,,Arrest the kids! and their sentence was to remove the grafitty and help paint MURALS! Their own designs,,,,their own hands! their own names!(Of course their records were esponged!) but it served 2 purposes.....creative release, and great public art........and a third! self esteem! some of these have gone to become recognized artists....
