Hi there,

How is everyone?

I heard that BA is very polluted. Are there areas outside of BA that aren't?

Also how easy is it to get organic produce & products, & do the farms use a lot of chemicals on their produce?

Hi,

BA is not that polluted, speaking of the air, except in the city center at 2 pm. In fact the original name of BA was Santa Maria del buen ayre (St Mary of the good air). You'll notice that around 5pm, usually a strong wind wakes up and brings lots of fresh air.

Organic products : there are a few threads about those. As for the chemicals used on fruits and veggies, Argentina likely does not meet the US or European standards.

I spent ten years in LA, and I find BsAs less polluted than that.
And compared to Bangkok, or other asian cities, much less just about anyplace in China, its very clean.
It really depends on what you are used to. Obviously, it is a big city, and there are loose pollution standards for buses and trucks, so if you live on a big street, and you leave your windows open, you do get a fair amount of street grime- not as bad as NYC, when I used to visit in the late 70's, where white shirts turned gray after a day out on the streets, but it IS a city.

As for organic- there is actually quite a bit- including the ubiquitous Argentine alternative- home delivery.

on the food note. anyone know if there's any good butter anywhere? not weird foamy stuff. Am looking for a genuine nice, full fat salted butter. No weird preservative or foamy crap.

This is odd, I've never had/heard of foamy butter here before--I thought I was familiar with all the foodie complaints! What kinds have you tried? Salted and unsalted butter are sold in pretty much every market around town in the refrigerated section, usually near the yogurts. I tend to buy the Sancor salted variety (manteca clasica). It's run of the mill, but it is regular butter. You can also buy ghee in barrio chino.
