Hello from Canada - Have some questions

Use common sense.

Some people carry their (small) backpacks up front, specially when riding public transportation. Designer purses are unaffordable for most girls your age, they will make you stand out.
If you catcha a pickpocket you raise your voice level enough to attract unwanted attention.Llikely, they (operate in groups) try to dissapear. If you grab one you risk being knifed by an accomplice.
Police are of no use, they can not leave the station, it's your word against the thieves. They get released almost immediately and you get stuck doing the paperwork. Eventually their lawyer makes your whereabouts available to them.

Language comes through ears and eyes, suggest you pick a subject you care about and interests you and start researching it in spanish to build your vocabulary. Your faded french might come in handy.

Also, dedicate some time to watch TV or listen to radio in spanish, try also to find something interesting. Suggest you watch movies in spanish with english subtitles at first and then switch those to spanish so you will get the spelling and the pronounciation.

Excellent argie movie (won an Oscar): The Secret in their eyes (2009).
The other night I enjoyed watching the latest Will Ferrell parody: Casa de mi padre. I trully hate his guts but he made the whole movie in spanish, speaks slowly and all in all is a good parody.
Check http://www.eltrecetv.com.ar/ a local TV network or a different channel. Get your ears used to "castillian". Locals do not refer to it as spanish and pronunciation is as distinctive as american and british english.
