Ah, I have a local debit card, not a credit card, maybe that's why it worked for you?

I wanted to buy from Microsoft since their subscription allows for 6 licenses, using my international credit card, but I wasn't able to. It's almost a year since I tried, so the details have thankfully faded from memory, but the process was an absolute circular nightmare.

Maybe but Microsoft should be making it easier for customers.

By the way, you "should" be able to pay for Office 365 with PayPal.

When Oracle acquired Open Office more than a decade ago, most of the contributers did not trust the situation and they created the fork LibreOffice. To prevent Open Office from dying completely, Oracle in the end gave it away to the Apache foundation. It still lives on, but it is a ghost of its former self. The true successor is LibreOffice, which is named differently because at the time Oracle owned the trade mark.

LibreOffice is most likely adequate as an alternative for Microsoft Office, but people usually do not take rational decisions. More often the reasoning goes like I want to use whatever everyone else is using.
