How do you find a nice and cheap apartment?

you can cancel a 2 year rental after 6 months legally, however it doesnt solve the garante proiblem

Hi,
I will spend 6 months in BA starting in October. I've been looking for apartments on different websites, but the rents seem expensive (700 USD for a studio, at least 1000 USD for a 1 bedroom). Or is that normal prices for BA now? The websites I've found are in English and for short term rentals so I suppose they are aimed at tourists. I'm also bringing my two cats and Argentinian landlords don't seem very feline friendly. Does anyone know websites that are more for locals and with cheaper apartments? I know that it's cheaper to rent unfurnished and for 2 years, but there must be some short term rentals that are less expensive, right? Thanks a lot!

hi, send me an email at [email protected] I have a really great cheap apartment in belgrano that i have to move out of. Drop me an email and I'll send you the photos etc its a new 1 bed 750 dollars (some bills included)

Hi, I'm Argentinian and I rent so perhaps I can help a little bit about this topic.

Renting an apartment with a garantee is not that easy, you need a friend or a relative who will be willing to offer you their garantee and also they have to sign the contract.

Anyway, for six months I don't recommend you to rent an apartment with a garantee because in order to sign the contract you will have to spend the equivalent to 3 month rent. If a one-bedroom apartment rent costs 2100 pesos, you will have to pay a deposit of the same ammount and also you have to pay the real state agency a commision which is also 2100 pesos, plus the 2100 of the first month of rent.

You can cancel a contract after 6 months but you have to pay a fine equivalent to 1 month and a half rent, so in the end you'll end up spending more money than expected.

I recommend Craigslist http://buenosaires.es.craigslist.org/roo/, Couchsurfing has also a group for renting: http://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=11412. And also solodueños, as someone mentioned before, has good options for temporary rental: http://www.soloduenos.com/

Also, furnishing an apartment, if you don't want anything fancy for your apartment, won't be so expensive. You can buy a second-hand fridge, a table, bed and chairs on Couchsurfing (http://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=11412), Craigslist ( http://buenosaires.es.craigslist.org/sss/) or Mercadolibre (http://www.mercadolibre.com.ar/). You can send your clothes to the laundry and buy some cheap silverware and cookware at a local bazar (Once Neighborhood on Pueyrredón and Belgrano on Cabildo avenue have bazars with good prices).

I hope this helps. Good luck! :)
