How to extend 90-day tourist visa?

Hi all,

I know that various people have asked about this topic in the past, but I wanted to ask again since it is clear that the immigration regulations have changed recently. What is the best way for a US citizen to extend the 90-day tourist period in Argentina? Various online forums I've found say that leaving the country and returning will get you a fresh 90-day period, while others say that you have to go to the Dirección General de Migraciones to get an extension. Other posts I've read say that if you overstay your 90-day period you'll simply have to pay a fee at the airport on your way out of the country. And on neither the US Department of State website nor on the Argentine Embassy website is there any information whatsoever about this issue. I am in Buenos Aires right now doing research for my PhD, and I am not finished with my research and need a bit more time to finish things up, so an extension of another 90 days would be more than enough.
Any advice that anyone could offer would be much appreciated!

Overstaying used to be the most economically sustainable option, but not anymore. Fees have risen considerably and I imagine they will continue to do so with the current situation here. Either get a 90 day extension at migraciones or enjoy a day in Uruguay and get a new 90 day stamp upon arrival back into Argentina

My suggestion is that you go to migraciones no more than ten days prior to the expiration of your current 90 day visa and an for the prorroga de permanencia (extension of stay). The current fee is $2700 pesos and it could increase at any time.

The present overstay fee is $4500 pesos and it will be increased at the same time. Both are likely to double... at the least.

Going to Uruguay will get you a fresh 90 day visa.

PS: I never went to Uruguay or had an overstay. I got one prorroga at migraciones. It was the most efficient and most economical route in 2006 and, in my opinion. still is today.

My preference is to go to Uruguay, since I've never been and it looks like an interesting place worth visiting. What was not clear before was whether doing this would in fact renew my 90-day tourist period or not. As you've clarified, it apparently will, and so I'll take this option.

Hi Guys. I have a slight variation on the question above. I am also looking to extend my Visa however I am now over the 90 day period by 5 days. I attempted to sort this out last week but long story short went to the wrong migration office and then made it to the correct one late.
Couldn't sort it out at the weekend so ended up going back to the migracion office today. The woman there told me no need to worry and just pay my fee at the airport when i leave in another 3 months tiem. However i'm planning on going to Brazil in november and then returning to argentina for 1 week and i'm worried they wont allow me back in. The woman photocopied my passport but I did not pay any sort of fee.

If I was to take the ferry to montivideo would I be able to pay my fine there then get a new 90 days when I return? My parents are coming to visit in November and I dont want to hold them up trying to sort out my fine at the airport when we go to Brazil.

You don't need to go to Montevideo, just pay your overstay fine when you go to Brazil. Why waste the money on Montevideo - the trip is expensive and the city is less than exciting. Once you overstayed the fine is the same - if it's been 1 hour or 1 year. When you come back from Brazil you'll get another 90 days stamp.

uw, if you are flying you pay it at the airport, but if you are crossing by land you better check if you can pay at the border - if not, you have to pay in advance in migraciones ( not earlier than 10 days before your departure ).
