The horse is just about dead here, but...I don't think there's more to her story.
Idealista shows there are only 488 (non-seasonal) apartments available for €1000 or less in a community where the median take home pay is €1,700 – €1,900....for a population of 3.4 million people. That's 1 affordable apartment per 7,377 residents.
Last I checked in May, Bumeran has the average salary in CABA per sector is $1.4M to $1.6M (excluding Mineria/Petroleo).
CABA had 2,130, 1 bedroom apartments under ARS $600,000 available for rent per Zonaprop.
With a population fo 3.6 million people, that's 1 affordable apartment for every 1,633 residents.
CABA has 4.5x greater supply of affordable housing than Madrid.
Idealista is not the only source to find rentals in Madrid. There are three other websites that I know about, and surely many more that I don't. There are also agencies, other non-real estate centered websites, friends, co-workers, bulletin boards, etc. And, through other sources, better deals than those offered on Idealista can be found.
Lanick quite possibly hit the nail on the head. Was she working in black for much less than is common, or was she a legal resident?
€500-600 is around ⅓ of a monthly €1600-1800 take home pay. A significant amount to pay for rent, but manageable for someone who knows how to budget well, and it's the typical ceiling for rent when people more knowledgeable than myself talk about a household budget. And it occurs that she probably wouldn't have been able to pay much less in a shared space anyway. From what I've seen, a four bedroom place in Madrid for less than €2000 is not that common. My math isn't that great, but what would that be for each of four roommates?
