Don't have any tips on buying a bikes other than the usual channels, but will say that though they won't always protect you, a U-lock is the only way to go in this city! I learned the hard way, more than once.

My 2 bikes (mine and my daughter's) were stolen as well, but I was stupid enough to leave them locked overnight (Fri to Sat) at the lamp post of a busy restaurant with valet parking staff who spend all night in their little cabin and a policeman on the opposite corner...

I have the feeling that the restaurant people did not like our bikes being parked in "their" territory and that they made them disappear - Those freaking ROND POINT mafiosos. They also slashed a neighbors' car tires + they kill trees on the bus stop of Canal 7 because they obstruct their restaurant's view.

Sorry for the OT rant.
